Gertrudis Bocanegra
María Gertrudis Teodora Bocanegra Mendoza (11 April 1765 – 11 October 1817) was a woman who fought in the Mexican War of Independence. She was arrested, tortured and executed in 1817. Life Gertrudis Bocanegra was born in Pátzcuaro in what is now the Mexican state of Michoacán, to Pedro Javier Bocanegra and Feliciana Mendoza (d. 15 November 1783). She married Lieutenant Pedro Advíncula Lazo de la Vega, a soldier in the Spanish provincial forces of Michoacán; they had six children (two sons and four daughters). Unusually for a woman of her time, Bocanegra had read the principal authors of the Age of Enlightenment. When Mexico's War of Independence began, she was quick to take sides. Her husband and eldest son joined the forces of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla when the insurgents passed through Valladolid (now Morelia) in October 1810. Gertrudis de la Fuente Sánchez (21 August 192123 January 2017) was a Spanish biochemist who specialised in enzymology. She was a professor in the Spanish National Research Council in Madrid''.'' She coordinated the Spanish government's commission to protect against the 1981 toxic oil syndrome. Her life and scientific career was partially chronicled in the short film, ''Gertrudis (la mujer que no enterró sus talentos),'' which was released in 2016. Early life and education Gertrudis de la Fuente Sánchez was born in Madrid, Spain on 21 August 1921, the daughter of a train driver. She moved to Arroyo de Malpartida, Cáceres aged six for her father's work. She grew up in a rural area, where girls were not usually educated beyond primary school, and did not start high school until her father retired. Gertrudis Josefa del Carmen Echenique y Mujica (1849–1928) was First Lady of Chile between 1896 and 1901. She was born in Santiago, the daughter of Juan José Echenique Bascuñán and of his second wife, Jesús Mujica Echaurren. She married Federico Errázuriz Echaurren in 1868, and together they had two children: Federico (1869-1897) and Elena Errázuriz Echeñique (1870-1966). After the death of her husband, she withdrew to her hacienda of ''El Huique'', in the province of Colchagua, which she continued to manage until her death. Gertrudis Gómez De Avellaneda
Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda y Arteaga (March 23, 1814 – February 1, 1873) was a 19th-century Cuban-born Spanish writer. Born in Puerto Príncipe, now Camagüey, she lived in Cuba until she was 22. Her family moved to Spain in 1836, where she started writing as La Peregrina (''The Pilgrim'') and lived there until 1859, when she moved back to Cuba with her second husband until his death in 1863, after which she moved back to Spain. She died in Madrid in 1873 from diabetes at the age of 58. She was a prolific writer and wrote 20 plays and numerous poems. Her most famous work, however, is the antislavery novel '' Sab'', published in Madrid in 1841. The eponymous protagonist is a slave who is deeply in love with his mistress Carlota, who is entirely oblivious to his feelings for her.
