Gertrude Hartland
Gertrude Hartland (1865–1954) was an Irish illustrator and landscape painter. From County Cork, other members of the Hartland family were involved in horticulture and art, and she was primarily known for illustrations and paintings of flowers. Life and work Born in County Cork, she was the daughter of Richard Hartland and Mary Walsh, and the niece of artist Henry Albert Hartland and plantsman William Baylor Hartland. Henry Albert Hartland
Henry Albert Hartland (2 August 1840 – 28 November 1893) was an Irish artist known for his watercolours and landscape paintings. Early life and family Hartland was born on 2 August 1840 in Bellevue, Mallow, County Cork. His father was William Baylor Hartland. He attended the Christian Brothers' School in Cork, then enrolling in the Cork School of Art. His family were nurserymen. His brother William Baylor Hartland was a well known plantsman. He was the uncle of illustrator Gertrude Hartland. Career After leaving art college he worked as an illustrator for a Cork bookseller, sketching mostly nature and landscapes, at a weekly salary of 30 shillings. He later built theatrical scenery for the Cork Theatre and the Theatre Royal, Dublin. Hartland moved to Liverpool in search of work around 1870, and lived there for most of the rest of his life. William Baylor Hartland
William Baylor Hartland (1836–1912) was a plantsman from Ireland. Family WB Hartland's grandfather, Richard Hartland (1745–1821), came to Ireland from the Kew Botanic Gardens in 1776 to become the gardener to the Earl of Kingston at Mitchelstown where he remained until 1785. Richard Hartland established a nursery at Belview, Mallow, in 1787. Each of Richard Hartland's three sons operated nurseries in County Cork: Arthur Hartland established a nursery at Turner's Cross, Richard Hartland Jr the Lough Nursery, and William Hartland (d.1843) operated the Mallow business. The latter relocated the business to Cork in 1810. In turn, William Hartland's two sons, William Baylor Hartland (1836–1912) and Henry Albert Hartland (1840–1893) became respectively a plantsman and artist.
