Germaine Acremant
Germaine Acremant (13 June 1889 - 24 August 1986) was a French novelist and playwright. Her best-known work is her first novel ''Ces dames aux chapeaux verts'' (These ladies with green hats), a satire of provincial life published in 1921. The Académie Française awarded her the Montyon Prize in 1940 and the Prix Alice-Louis Barthou in 1943. Early life and education Germaine Fanny Marie Joséphine Poulain was born 13 June 1889, in Saint-Omer, Pas-de-Calais. She was the third child and the only daughter of Édouard Poulain, a doctor in Saint-Omer, (Pas-de-Calais), rue de Valbelle. Saint-Omer (; vls, Sint-Omaars) is a commune and sub-prefecture of the Pas-de-Calais department in France. It is west-northwest of Lille on the railway to Calais, and is located in the Artois province. The town is named after Saint Audomar, who brought Christianity to the area. Maurice Cloche (17 June 1907, Commercy, Meuse – 23 March 1990, Bordeaux, France) was a French film director, screenwriter, photographer and film producer. Best known for his Oscar-winning film ''Monsieur Vincent'' (1947) he won a 1948 Special Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. ''Monsieur Vincent,'' a dramatization of the life of St. Vincent de Paul that starred Pierre Fresnay, won the Academy Award in 1947 for best foreign film. It also was honored as the best film in France that year. Mr. Cloche, whose career spanned more than a half-century, also made spy thrillers and films with religious and social themes. Plon is a French book publishing company, founded in 1852 by Henri Plon and his two brothers. The Plon family were Walloons coming from Nivelles, Belgium. One of their ancestors is probably the Danish typographer Jehan Plon who lived at the end of the 16th century. History The ''Éditions Plon'' were created in 1852, by Henri Plon and his two brothers. They were given the title of ''Imprimeur de l’Empereur'' (Imperial publisher) and published the correspondence of Louis XIII of France, Marie Antoinette and Napoleon I of France. During the 1920s the house published the novels of the Jewish-Algerian writer Elissa Rhaïs. Plon published Quid, an encyclopedia, from 1963 to 1974. Étaples or Étaples-sur-Mer (; vls, Stapel, lang; pcd, Étape) is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in northern France. It is a fishing and leisure port on the Canche river. History Étaples takes its name from having been a medieval staple port (''stapal'' in Old Dutch), from which word the Old French word ''Estaples'' derives. As a port it was part of the administrative and economic complex centred on Montreuil after access from the sea to that town was restricted by silting. The site of modern Étaples lies on the ridge of dunes which once lay to seaward of a marsh formed off-shore from the chalk plateau of Artois.
