Gerhard Johannes Botterweck
Gerhard Johannes Botterweck (25 April 1917, in Rheydt – 15 Ajpril 1981, in Bonn) was a German theologian, Old Testament scholar and dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Bonn. He is best known for his multi volume work the ''Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament''. Life and work Botterweck studied philosophy Catholic theology and oriental studies in Frankfurt and Vienna. In 1944 he received his doctorate in Vienna, Ph.D. and the same year was ordained a priest. While a military chaplain on the Eastern Front (World War II) he lost a leg. He was chaplain and religion teacher at Viersen (Diocese of Aachen). In 1950, his doctoral (PhD) promotion was followed by a Doctorate of Divinity, and in 1953 habilitation in Bonn. From 1953 to 1959 he was professor of Old Testament at Tübingen, then from 1960 to 1981 in Bonn. Three editions have appeared so far, all published by Herder-Verlag in Freiburg im Breisgau. First edition: 1930 to 1938 The first edition of the ''Lexikon'' was edited by Michael Buchberger, Bishop of Regensburg, between 1930 and 1938. It was an emended and expanded version of an earlier work in two volumes entitled ''Kirchliches Handlexikon'' (Munich, 1904–1912). ''Kürschners Deutscher Gelehrten-Kalender'' (English: "Kürschner's Encyclopedia of German Scholars"), formerly subtitled ''Lexikon der lebenden deutschsprachigen Wissenschaftler'' ("Encyclopedia of Living German-Speaking Scholars"), is a German language biographical and bibliographical encyclopedia of scientists and scholars from the German-speaking part of Europe. It is published by Walter de Gruyter. The first edition appeared in 1925, edited by Gerhard Lüdtke. Prior to the 9th edition, it consisted of one volume, but with the 6th edition in 1941 and then again from the 9th in 1961 it was extended to two volumes. Since the 22nd edition in 2009, it includes four volumes. The 28th edition appeared in 2016.
