Gerard Bros.
Gerard Bros. Ltd. was a manufacturer of personal healthcare products. The business was founded in 1876 and incorporated in 1897, and Thomas Bruges Gerard was voted its first chairman. The company established a factory in Wilkinson Street, Basford, Nottingham, New Basford, Nottingham. The factory was built on a site and pumped water from the River Leen. In 1921 the factory was severely damaged by fire, but the subsequent rebuild afforded the opportunity to expand the factory. In 1955 the company was acquired by Cussons Sons & Co., chaired by Leslie Cussons makers of the famous brand Imperial Leather, Cussons Imperial Leather soap. After the acquisition Cussons kept the Gerard Bros. factory in use. In 1975 Cussons Sons & Co. were themselves acquired by Paterson Zochonis (recently renamed to PZ Cussons). Imperial Leather is a brand of soaps, toiletries and healthcare products manufactured by PZ Cussons. The brand originates in Britain and is now available in a number of other countries including Australia, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Kenya, Malawi, Malta, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Uganda, the United Arab Emirates and Zambia. Leslie Cussons
__NOTOC__ Leslie Cussons (13 January 1907 – 6 September 1963). Born in Swinton, near Salford, Lancashire, England to Alexander Tom Cussons (1875–1951) and his wife Emily Jane Cussons (née Kidd, 1875–1957). Leslie was the Chairman of Cussons Sons & Co, the largest independent soap manufacturer in Britain. Leslie continued manufacturing of the famous brand Cussons Imperial Leather. Career Leslie worked at the Cussons Company from 1924 until his death in 1963. In 1951 Leslie succeeded his father to become chairman of the Cussons Company. Leslie oversaw the acquisition of Gerard Bros. in 1955, and subsequently made extensive improvements to the Gerard Bros Nottingham factory. In 1957 Leslie also acquired the 1001 Carpet Cleaner brand, and made it into Britain's leading carpet cleaner. River Leen
The River Leen is a 15-mile (24 km) long tributary of the River Trent that flows through Nottinghamshire, and the city of Nottingham in the East Midlands of England. The name Leen developed through various renderings of the Celtic word meaning "lake" or "pool" (''Llyn'' in modern Welsh). Some of the surrounding villages derived their name from the River Leen. Lenton, ''ton'' being the Saxon word for "village"; and Linby, ''by'' being the Danish equivalent of ''ton.'' Course The Leen rises as a series of springs at the foot of the Robin Hood Hills just outside Annesley.
