Georges (novel)
''Georges'' is a novel by Alexandre Dumas, père set on Isle de France (Mauritius), from 1810 to 1824. This novel is of particular scholarly interest because Dumas reused many of its ideas and plot device, plot devices later in ''The Count of Monte Cristo'' and because race and racism are at the center of the novel, a topic Dumas rarely wrote about, despite his part-African ancestry. ''Georges'' was first published in 1843. It has been republished in English as ''George; or, the Planter of the Isle of France''. A new translation by Tina Kover, edited by Werner Sollors and with an introduction by Jamaica Kincaid, was published by Random House, Inc./Modern Library in May 2007. Plot The novel concerns the life of Georges, the son of a wealthy mulatto planter named Pierre Munier, on the French colonial empire, French colony of Mauritius. While also being a mulatto, Georges is very light-skinned to the point where he can Passing (racial identity), pass for being White people, white. ...

Georges (store)
Georges was a department store in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, established in 1880 and closed in 1995. Georges Store began as George & George's Federal Emporium, founded by brothers William and Alfred George, in 1880, moving in 1883 to a large four storey building at 280 Collins Street (originally 11-17 Collins Street East, which had been built in 1877 as Briscoe's warehouse). In 1888 they amalgamated with the Equitable Co-operative Store, located in a grand classical revival style building at 162-168 Collins Street (originally 89 Collins Street East) built in 1884, and designed by architects John Grainger and Charles D'Ebro. In September 1889 a disastrous fire destroyed their 280 Collins premises (which was then replaced by the first stage of the Block Arcade), after which they simply rebranded the 162-168 Collins Street location. In 1891 the building was refurbished and extended through to Little Collins Street, designed by D'Ebro alone. There were two smaller Georges' bra ...

French Frigate Georges Leygues (D640)
''Georges Leygues'' (D640) was the lead ship of the F70 type anti-submarine frigate of the French ''Marine Nationale''. The French Navy does not use the term " destroyer" for its ships; hence some large ships, referred to as "frigates", are registered as destroyers. She was the second French vessel named after the 19–20th century politician and Navy Minister, Georges Leygues. She was the tender for the former helicopter cruiser ''Jeanne d'Arc''. Service history In 1981, ''Georges Leygues'' and the fleet escort ''Guépratte'', cruising in front of an Allied fleet during training sessions, detected a Soviet submarine, which they chased for 19 hours. A rare instance of submarine warfare occurred, the Soviet submarine tried running at and diving under the sonar of ''Georges Leygues'' to try to avoid detection, before she was forced to surface, being formally identified as a Victor class submarine by the on-board Lynx WG13. The same year, ''Georges Leygues'' intervened whe ...
