George William Whitaker
George William Whitaker (September 25, 1840 – March 6, 1916) was a prominent Rhode Island landscape painter during the late 19th and early 20th century, known as the "Dean of Providence painters" or the "Dean of Rhode Island Artists." Early life Whitaker was born September 25, 1840, in Fall River, Massachusetts, to James and Elizabeth (Monday) Whitaker. George's father James was born in England and came to the United States as a child. Both George's parents died at a young age, leaving George an orphan at the age of two. George was raised by his maternal grandparents in Providence, Rhode Island. George attended public schools in Providence, where his skills at drawing became evident. At age 14, George lived at the North American Phalanx, a transcendental community at Red Bank, New Jersey. There he studied with a painting instructor, Professor Guilledeau. László Paál
László Paál (30 July 1846, Zam, Hunedoara, Zám, Transylvania, Austrian Empire - 4 March 1879, Charenton-le-Pont, France) was a Hungarian Impressionist landscape painter. Life He was descended from a noble family and his father was a postmaster, which resulted in frequent moves for the family. He displayed an early talent for art and his first lessons came from Pál Böhm in Arad, Romania, Arad. Upon his father's request, he went to Vienna in 1864 to study law, but began preparatory studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, Academy of Fine Arts and became a student of Albert Zimmermann in 1866. Three years later, he participated in a major exhibition in Munich, where he first came into contact with painters of the Barbizon school. In 1870, he and Eugen Jettel took a study trip to the Netherlands and, later that same year, he entered the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf on the recommendation of his boyhood friend, Mihály Munkácsy.
