George William Lamplugh
George William Lamplugh (8 April 1859 – 9 October 1926) was a British geologist. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1905 and won the Wollaston Medal of the Geological Society in 1925. He was awarded the Bigsby Medal in 1901. Lamplugh and the Isle of Man Working between 1892 and 1897, Lamplugh made the first official geological map of the Isle of Man under the auspices of the British Geological Survey. His original observations and field maps are kept at the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh. British Geological Survey
The British Geological Survey (BGS) is a partly publicly funded body which aims to advance geoscientific knowledge of the United Kingdom landmass and its continental shelf by means of systematic surveying, monitoring and research. The BGS headquarters are in Keyworth, Nottinghamshire, England. Its other centres are located in Edinburgh, Wallingford, Cardiff and London. The current motto of the BGS is: ''Gateway to the Earth''. History and previous names The Geological Survey was founded in 1835 by the Board of Ordnance as the Ordnance Geological Survey, under Henry De la Beche. The Wollaston Medal is a scientific award for geology, the highest award granted by the Geological Society of London. The medal is named after William Hyde Wollaston, and was first awarded in 1831. The Manx Museum (Thie Tashtee Vannin) in Douglas, Isle of Man is the national museum of the Isle of Man. It is run by Manx National Heritage. In general, the museum covers 10,000 years the history of the Isle of Man from the Stone Age to the modern era. The museum serves as headquarters of Manx National Heritage. The museum bears no relation to the institution with the same name founded by Trevor Ashe in 1825.
