George Stringam
George Lewis Stringam (May 21, 1876 – July 4, 1959) was a provincial politician and cattle rancher from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1921 to 1935 sitting with the United Farmers caucus in government. Early life George Lewis Stringam was born on May 21, 1876, in Holden, Utah, United States. He married Mary Anne Snow on October 17, 1897, and fathered two children. Both children, twins, died at birth on July 21, 1898, and his wife died a few days later due to complications. Stringam married Sarah Lovina Williams on June 7, 1905. He fathered eleven children with her, two of which died at an early age. Political career Stringam ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature as a United Farmers candidate in the 1921 Alberta general election in the electoral district of Cardston. Holden, Utah
Holden is a town in Millard County, Utah, United States. The population was 378 at the 2010 census. History Holden was settled in 1855 by a group of ten families sent out by the bishop of the local congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fillmore. Named Cedar Springs for the springs in the junipers that the community was built around. The town then assumed the name Buttermilk Fort because travelers passing through were encouraged to stop for a glass of cold buttermilk while resting. The town got its post office in 1864, and the town was renamed for Elijah E. Holden, a member of the Mormon Battalion who was one of the first settlers of Holden and died while caught in a snowstorm in 1858. Bryce Coleman Stringam (February 8, 1920 – June 2, 2000) was a politician and author from Alberta, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1955 to 1959 as an independent. Early life Stringam's father, George Stringam, was a member of the Alberta legislature. Stringam graduated from Olds College with a degree in agronomy in 1937 and became a cattle rancher. He married Mary Morgan and fathered seven children. Political career Stringam first ran for a seat in the Alberta Legislature in the 1955 general election. Running as an independent in the electoral district of Bow Valley-Empress, he defeated incumbent Wilson Cain. Alberta Social Credit was a provincial political party in Alberta, Canada, that was founded on social credit monetary policy put forward by Clifford Hugh Douglas and on conservative Christian social values. The Canadian social credit movement was largely an out-growth of Alberta Social Credit. The Social Credit Party of Canada was strongest in Alberta, before developing a base in Quebec when Réal Caouette agreed to merge his Ralliement créditiste movement into the federal party. The British Columbia Social Credit Party formed the government for many years in neighbouring British Columbia, although this was effectively a coalition of centre-right forces in the province that had no interest in social credit monetary policies. 1935 Alberta General Election
The 1935 Alberta general election was held on August 22, 1935, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The newly founded Social Credit Party of Alberta won a sweeping victory, unseating the 14-year government of the United Farmers of Alberta. It was one of only five times that Alberta has changed governments. Premier John E. Brownlee had resigned on July 10, 1934, when he was sued and found liable for the seduction of a young clerk working in the Attorney-General's office. Although the verdict was immediately set aside by the presiding judge, the scandal seriously damaged the UFA's reputation among socially conservative Albertans. Provincial Treasurer Richard G. Reid succeeded him, but was unable to change the party's fortunes. The 1926 Alberta general election was held on June 28, 1926, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The United Farmers of Alberta government that had first been elected in 1921 was re-elected, taking a majority of the seats in the Alberta Legislature. Herbert Greenfield had resigned as United Farmers leader and premier, and John E. Brownlee led the UFA to this second election victory, increasing the UFA's number of seats. The writs of election were issued on May 10, 1926, allowing an election period of 40 days. 1926 was Alberta's first general election where Single transferable voting (STV) was used in the three largest cities and Instant-runoff voting was used everywhere else.
