George Spangenberg
George Spangenberg (June 22, 1912November 13, 2000) was head of aircraft design in the United States Navys Naval Air Systems Command. He participated in the design and development of the original VFX/F-14 Tomcat, and selection of the YF-17 and design of the F/A-18 Hornet for the US Navy. Craig Spangenberg (18 February 1914 – 17 March 1998) was a nationally-renowned trial attorney who founded the law firm now known aSpangenberg, Shibley & Liberin Cleveland, Ohio. Education Craig Spangenberg earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Michigan in the 1930s. The University of Michigan Law School awards the Craig Spangenberg Oral Advocacy Award in recognition of his trial advocacy legacy. Craig was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1938. The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is an American carrier-capable supersonic aircraft, supersonic, twinjet, twin-engine, two-seat, twin-tail, variable-sweep wing fighter aircraft. The Tomcat was developed for the United States Navy's Naval Fighter Experimental (VFX) program after the collapse of the General Dynamics–Grumman F-111B, General Dynamics-Grumman F-111B project. The Northrop YF-17 (nicknamed "Cobra") is a prototype lightweight fighter aircraft designed by Northrop aviation for the United States Air Force's Lightweight Fighter (LWF) technology evaluation program. The LWF was initiated because many in the fighter community believed that aircraft like the F-15 Eagle were too large and expensive for many combat roles. The YF-17 was the culmination of a long line of Northrop designs, beginning with the N-102 Fang in 1956, continuing through the F-5 family. The Lightweight Fighter (LWF) program was a United States Air Force technology evaluation program initiated in the late 1960s by a group of officers and defense analysts known as the "Fighter Mafia". It was spurred by then-Major John Boyd (military strategist), John Boyd's Energy–maneuverability theory, 'energy-maneuverability' (E-M) theory, which indicated that excessive weight would have severely debilitating consequences on the maneuverability of an aircraft. Boyd's design called for a light-weight fighter with a high thrust-to-weight ratio, high maneuverability, and a gross weight of less than , half that of its counterpart, the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle.
