George Roughton
William George Roughton (11 December 1909 – 7 June 1989) was a professional footballer who played for Huddersfield Town and Manchester United in the 1930s and was subsequently manager of Exeter City and Southampton. Club career Roughton was born in Manchester and played for his local team Droylsden in the Manchester League. He started his professional career at Huddersfield Town, then in Division 1, in 1927 and was a regular member of the team, playing at full-back. He helped Huddersfield to the runners-up position in the 1933–34 season. Roughton was a member of the FA Touring party that visited Canada in the summer of 1931 and featured in international trials in 1931 and 1934. He went on to win league honours turning out for the Football league versus the Irish League in September 1934 helping the Football league to a 6–1 victory in Belfast. Norman Kirkman
Norman Kirkman (6 June 1920 – 17 November 1995) was an English footballer who played as a full-back for various clubs in the Football League in the 1940s and 1950s, before a brief career as a manager. Football career Playing career Kirkman was born in Bolton and attended Folds Road School. His football career started when he joined Burnley in May 1939, but his professional career was immediately interrupted by the Second World War. During the war, he trained as an R.A.F. navigator and represented the R.A.F. in a football match against an Army team. He also made guest appearances for Brighton & Hove Albion, Fulham and Manchester United. After he was "demobbed", he returned to Burnley before being signed by Rochdale in October 1946. Ted Bates (footballer)
Edric Thornton Bates MBE (3 May 1918 – 28 November 2003) was a former Southampton F.C. player, manager, director and president which earned him the sobriquet ''Mr. Southampton''. Ted was the son of Eddie Bates, who played cricket for Yorkshire and Glamorgan and football for Bolton Wanderers and Leeds United. He was the grandson of Billy Bates who was one of the finest all-rounders for England in the early years of international cricket. Playing career Bates was born in Thetford and joined Saints on his 19th birthday in 1937, transferring from Norwich City. He soon forced his way into the first team as a centre-forward. Sid Cann
Sydney Thomas Cann (30 October 1911 – 1 November 1996) was an English professional football defender and football manager. He was capped twice by England at Schools level. Playing career Born in Babbacombe, Torquay, Sid Cann joined Torquay United from Babbacombe school in November 1928, making his league debut away to Crystal Palace. After battling for a first team place with Willie Brown, he began the following season as a first choice, missing only a handful of games before moving to Manchester City in March 1930. He played 42 league games for the Maine Road side, appearing on the losing side in the 1933 FA Cup final, but was never a first team regular and moved to Charlton Athletic in June 1935 and qualified as an FA Coach, making only 15 appearances as Charlton rose through the divisions prior to the onset of World War Two.
