George Morrison (documentary Maker)
George Edward MorrisonPaul Levy, ‘FitzGibbon , Theodora (1916–1991)’, ''Oxford Dictionary of National Biography'', Oxford University Press, 2004; online edn, May 201/ref> (born 1922) is an Irish director of film documentaries. His works include 1959 documentary ''Mise Éire'' and ''Saoirse?''. Morrison was born in Tramore, County Waterford. His mother was an actress at Dublin's Gate Theatre, while his father worked as a neurological anaesthetist. Morrison studied medicine at Trinity College, Dublin but dropped out in order to pursue his ambition to work in films. Early in his career he assisted director Hilton Edwards in two of the latter's films: ''From Time to Time'' and ''Hamlet of Elsinore''. For ''Mise Éire'', Morrison painstakingly assembled historical footage of the events surrounding the 1916 Rising from archives across Europe. Tramore, County Waterford
Tramore (; ) is a seaside town in County Waterford, on the southeast coast of Ireland. With humble origins as a small fishing village, the area saw rapid development upon the arrival of the railway from Waterford City in 1853. Initially, the town flourished as a tourist destination, attracting visitors from as far away as Dublin in summer and from closer to home all year-round. As the population grew steadily in the latter part of the 20th century, Tramore became a satellite and dormitory town of Waterford City, situated some 13 km to the north. The Irish Civil War ( ga, Cogadh Cathartha na hÉireann; 28 June 1922 – 24 May 1923) was a conflict that followed the Irish War of Independence and accompanied the establishment of the Irish Free State, an entity independent from the United Kingdom but within the British Empire. The civil war was waged between the Provisional Government of Ireland (1922), Provisional Government of Ireland and the Irish Republican Army (1922–1969), Irish Republican Army (IRA) over the Anglo-Irish Treaty. The Provisional Government (which became the Free State in December 1922) supported the terms of the treaty, while the Anglo-Irish Treaty#Dáil debates, anti-treaty opposition saw it as a betrayal of the Irish Republic which had been proclaimed during the Easter Rising of 1916. Aosdána ( , ; from , 'people of the arts') is an Irish association of artists. It was created in 1981 on the initiative of a group of writers with support from the country's Arts Council. Membership, which is by invitation from current members, is limited to 250 individuals; before 2005 it was limited to 200. Its governing body is called the Toscaireacht. Formation Aosdána was originally set up on the suggestion of writer Anthony Cronin, by ''Taoiseach'' Charles Haughey, well known for his support for the Arts, although Fintan O'Toole has argued that this also served to deflect criticism of Haughey's political actions. Saoi (, plural ''Saoithe''; literally "wise one"; historically the title of the head of a bardic school) is the highest honour bestowed by Aosdána, a state-supported association of Irish creative artists. The title is awarded, for life, to an existing Aosdána member. There are at most seven living Saoithe at any time; a limit increased from five in 2007–08. At the conferring ceremony, a torc (a twist/spiral of gold, worn around the neck) is presented to the Saoi, typically by the President of Ireland.
