George Mihalcheon
George M. Mihalcheon (Romanian: George Mihălcean October 1, 1893 – October 2, 1956) was a politician from Alberta, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1926 to 1930 as a member of the United Farmers caucus in government. Early life Mihalcheon was born in 1893 in Boian, Bukovina, a village which is now in Ukraine. He moved to Alberta with his family in 1901 to the town of Hairy Hill. Boiany ( uk, Бояни; ro, Boian; yi, באיאן ''Boyan'') is a village in Chernivtsi Raion, Chernivtsi Oblast (province) of western Ukraine. It is located close to Sadagura in the historic region of Bukovina. It hosts the administration of Boiany rural hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. It was the ancestral estate of Ion Neculce, chronicler of the history of the Principality of Moldavia in the 18th century. Hairy Hill, Alberta
Hairy Hill is a hamlet in Alberta, Canada within the County of Two Hills No. 21. It is located on Highway 45, approximately east of Edmonton. Hairy Hill got its name from the large amount of bison hair found on the hills in the area when the Canadian Pacific Railway founded the hamlet in the early 20th century. Andrew Shandro (politician)
Andrew Stefan Shandro (April 3, 1886 – January 13, 1942), was a Ukrainian-Canadian politician from Alberta. In 1913 he became the first Ukrainian Canadian to serve in the Alberta Legislature. Early life Andrew Stefan Shandro was born April 3, 1886 in Ruskiy-Banyliw Bukowina to Stefan Shandro and his wife, Anastasia (née Ostashek). He was a member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada. His grandfather was a judge and an uncle was a general in the Austro-Hungarian army. He emigrated to Canada in 1899 with his parents from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and settled northeast of Andrew, Alberta near the North Saskatchewan River. He became a prominent farmer and was postmaster of Shandro, Alberta, a rural community that bore his family's name. In 1905 he married Rose Hawrelak, daughter of Nicoli Hawrelak of Bukowina; they had six children. 1926 Alberta General Election
The 1926 Alberta general election was held on June 28, 1926, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The United Farmers of Alberta government that had first been elected in 1921 was re-elected, taking a majority of the seats in the Alberta Legislature. Herbert Greenfield had resigned as United Farmers leader and premier, and John E. Brownlee led the UFA to this second election victory, increasing the UFA's number of seats. The writs of election were issued on May 10, 1926, allowing an election period of 40 days. 1926 was Alberta's first general election where Single transferable voting (STV) was used in the three largest cities and Instant-runoff voting was used everywhere else. Boian, Alberta
Boian is an unincorporated community in Alberta, Canada. It is located in the floodplain of the North Saskatchewan River, 6 km east of Willingdon, in County of Two Hills No. 21. It is the oldest Romanian settlement in Canada. History The community was named for Boian, a Romanian village in Bukovina, from where the settlers originated. In the fall of 1903, the community began building a Romanian Orthodox Church, named by locals after one in their homeland, ''St Mary Orthodox Church''. It was completed in the summer of 1905. By the year 1909, the need for a local school became more immediate, so a small building was constructed in 1910; later a three room school was built from stone which was the largest rural school in Alberta. The Romanians of Boian did not have enough farmland to further homestead, so many of the first generation went on to form new Romanian communities in Pierceland, Saskatchewan and Manning, Alberta.
