George McMurrich
George McMurrich (October 29, 1844 - September 7, 1913) was a long-time member of Toronto City Council in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was a senior member of George McMurrich & Sons, insurance agents, and at various times, a member of the Toronto School Board, the Toronto City Council and the Toronto Board of Trade. Biography McMurrich, who in his business life ran an insurance firm, was first elected an alderman for St. George's Ward in 1891, represented Ward Three from 1892 to 1903 except for 1897 and 1899 when he was not on council. After a break of three years, he was elected to represent Ward Four and did so continuously until his death in 1913. He ran for mayor twice, in the 1897 Toronto municipal election in which he lost to incumbent mayor Robert Fleming by 1,600 votes and in 1899 Toronto municipal election when he came in third. Toronto City Council is the governing body of the municipal government of Toronto, Ontario. Meeting at Toronto City Hall, it comprises 25 city councillors and the mayor of Toronto. The current term began on November 15, 2022. Structure The current decision-making framework and committee structure at the City of Toronto was established by the '' City of Toronto Act, 2006'' and came into force January 1, 2007. Robert John Fleming (Canadian Politician)
Robert John Fleming (November 23, 1854 – October 26, 1925) was twice Mayor of Toronto (1892–1893 and 2nd incumbency 1896–1897) Born in Toronto, Robert John Fleming was of Irish ancestry, the son of William and Jane (Cauldwell) Fleming. Educated in Toronto public schools he first entered the business world in real estate. From there he moved on to the Toronto Railway Company becoming the general manager in 1905. He was also a member of the Orange Order in Canada. Fleming's political career began as an Alderman for the Ward of St. David's 1886 to 1890. In 1892 Toronto municipal election, he was elected mayor of Toronto. He was defeated in 1894 and 1895 but was returned to office in the 1896 Toronto municipal election and again the next year. Municipal elections were held in Toronto, Canada, on January 2, 1899. Mayor John Shaw was elected for his third consecutive term in office defeating opponent Ernest A. Macdonald and Third Ward Alderman George McMurrich. It was Macdonald's third unsuccessful attempt to be elected mayor, and McMurrich's second. Streetcar
A tram (called a streetcar or trolley in North America) is a rail vehicle that travels on tramway tracks on public urban streets; some include segments on segregated right-of-way. The tramlines or networks operated as public transport are called tramways or simply trams/streetcars. Many recently built tramways use the contemporary term light rail. Toronto Board Of Control
The Board of Control of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, was a part of its municipal government until it was abolished in 1969. It served as the executive committee of the Toronto City Council. When it was initially created in 1896 by mandate of the provincial government, it consisted of three Controllers appointed from and by the aldermen, and presided over by the Mayor of Toronto. Beginning in 1904, the Board of Control was directly elected by the city's electorate and consisted of four Controllers, presided over by the Mayor. Each voter could vote for up to four candidates, and the four with the most votes were elected. By tradition the controller who received the most votes would get the powerful budget chief position. John McMurrich
John McMurrich (February 3, 1804 – February 13, 1883) was a businessman and political figure in Canada West and later Ontario. He was born near Paisley, Scotland in 1804 and came to Upper Canada in 1833 to work in a York (Toronto) dry goods business affiliated with a Glasgow-based firm. He became a partner in 1837. McMurrich served on Toronto city council in 1860. He was elected to the Legislative Council of the Province of Canada in an 1862 by-election. He served on the Public School Board in Toronto for a number of years and was chairman from 1865 to 1867 and in 1870. In 1867, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario for York North as a Liberal; he was defeated in 1871. He was a member of the Toronto Board of Trade and served as president for a number of Toronto companies. He died in Toronto in 1883. His eldest son, William Barclay McMurrich, was a mayor of Toronto. William Barclay McMurrich
William Barclay McMurrich (November 1, 1842 – September 6, 1908) was a Canadian lawyer and politician. He was the mayor of Toronto from 1881 to 1882. He was also a member of the Orange Order in Canada. Born in Toronto, the son of John McMurrich and Janet Dixon, McMurrich was educated at Knox Academy and Upper Canada College. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1863 and a Master of Arts degree in 1864 from the University of Toronto. He then studied law and was called to the Bar in 1866. He was a practising lawyer. In 1868, he was elected a public school trustee for the St. Andrew's ward and served in this position for eight years. In 1879, he was elected to the Toronto City Council for the St. Patrick's Ward. In 1881, he was elected mayor of Toronto and re-elected in 1882. He did not run in 1883 instead was a candidate for the House of Commons of Canada in the riding of West Toronto in the 1882 federal election.
