1899 Toronto Municipal Election
Municipal elections were held in Toronto, Canada, on January 2, 1899. Mayor John Shaw was elected for his third consecutive term in office defeating opponent Ernest A. Macdonald and Third Ward Alderman George McMurrich. It was Macdonald's third unsuccessful attempt to be elected mayor, and McMurrich's second. John Shaw (Canadian Politician)
John Shaw (1837 – November 7, 1917) was Mayor of Toronto from August 6, 1897, to January 1, 1899. A lawyer and politician, Shaw was an alderman on Toronto City Council from 1883 until 1895. He ran for mayor in the 1896 Toronto municipal election but was defeated by the incumbent Robert J. Fleming. As alderman again in 1897, he was elected mayor by council, after Mayor Fleming resigned in August 1897. During the summer of 1898, the new City Hall on Queen Street was completed and occupied. Ten years earlier construction had started on the city hall designed by Toronto architect E. J. Lennox. Mayor Shaw and his wife were part of the opening ceremonies and were lifted to the top of the clock tower in a wooden workman's lift. Mayor Shaw believed that the northland's development was very important to Toronto. He presided over the Toronto and Hudson's Bay Railway Commission. Thomas Urquhart (politician)
Thomas Urquhart (April 16, 1858 – February 16, 1931) was a Canadian politician and mayor of Toronto. Early life Urquhart was born in Wallacetown, Dunwich Township, Elgin County, Canada West. His parents were Sarah McCallum and Alexander Cameron Urquhart, a pioneer tailor and storekeeper who immigrated from Dingwall, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland to Canada in 1847. He attended public school in Wallacetown until he was 13 years old. He then spent years working with his father. At 21, he was appointed municipal clerk of the Township of Dunwich. Later, he became secretary of the Agricultural Society of West Elgin and secretary of the West Elgin Reform Association. He decided to enter law, and after passing the matriculation examination in 1881, he entered a law office in St. Thomas. In 1882 he entered a second law as a student. William Peyton Hubbard
William Peyton Hubbard (January 27, 1842 – April 30, 1935), a Toronto alderman from 1894 to 1914, was a popular and influential politician, nicknamed Cicero for his oratory; he was one of the first politicians of African descent elected to office in Canada. Ned Hanlan
Edward Hanlan (12 July 1855 – 4 January 1908) was a Canadian professional sculler, hotelier, and alderman from Toronto, Ontario. Early life Hanlan was born to Irish parents; one of two sons and two daughters. His mother was Mary Gibbs, his father, John, was first a fisherman and later a hotel keeper on the Toronto Islands. The Hanlan family originally lived at the east end of Toronto Island, but a severe storm in 1865 pushed their house into the harbour. It washed ashore near the north end of Gibraltar Point, at the island's west end. A few years later, Hanlan's father built a small hotel there, and the area started becoming known as Hanlan's Point, long before Hanlan became famous. William Raney
William Edgar Raney (1859–1933) was a lawyer, politician and judge in Ontario, Canada, in the early twentieth century. He was known for his opposition to gambling on horse racing and the sale of alcohol. Early life Born on December 8, 1859, on a farm near Aultsville, Ontario, to Herman and Mary Raney, Raney was descended from Huguenot, Dutch and United Empire Loyalist stock. Raney received his education in a traditional log schoolhouse near his home. He was briefly a teacher at the St. Catharines Collegiate Institute, and then worked for two years as a journalist in the State of Maine (US) and Kingston, ON. Thomas Foster (July 24, 1852 – December 10, 1945) was a Canadian businessman and politician who served as Mayor of Toronto from 1925 to 1927. Early life The son of John T. Foster and Frances Nicholson, Thomas Foster was born July 24, 1852, in Lambton Mills, Canada West. His family soon moved to Leaskdale, Canada West after his mother's death. He started his working life as a butcher's boy in Toronto, until he saved enough money to purchase his own butcher shop for $50. The earnings from that business allowed him to purchase property, which became the source of his eventual wealth. Bay Street
Bay Street is a major thoroughfare in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is the centre of Toronto's Financial District and is often used by metonymy to refer to Canada's financial services industry since succeeding Montreal's St. James Street in that role in the 1970s. Bay Street begins at Queens Quay (Toronto Harbour) in the south and ends at Davenport Road in the north. The original section of Bay Street ran only as far north as Queen Street West and just south of Front Street where the Grand Trunk rail lines entered into Union Station. Sections north of Queen Street were renamed Bay Street as several other streets were consolidated and several gaps filled in to create a new thoroughfare in the 1920s.
