George Manners Astley, 20th Baron Hastings
George Manners Astley, 20th Baron Hastings, 10th Baronet Astley (4 April 1857 – 18 September 1904) became the heir to the Hastings barony upon the death of his unmarried brother in 1875. Biography George Manners Astley was born in 1857 at Melton Constable Hall in Norfolk, the son of Sir Delaval Loftus Astley, 18th Baron Hastings and Hon. Frances Diana Manners-Sutton. The Anglo-Norman Hastings barony was established in the year 1295, but was dormant from 1389, with multiple claimants, and then became abeyant from 1542. The barony was revived for Jacob Astley in 1841, who became the 16th Baron. George Manners Astley was educated at Eton and at Trinity College, Cambridge. On 17 April 1880, Lord Hastings married Hon. Seaton Delaval Hall
Seaton Delaval Hall is a Grade I listed country house in Northumberland, England, near the coast just north of Newcastle upon Tyne. Located between Seaton Sluice and Seaton Delaval, it was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh in 1718 for Admiral George Delaval; it is now owned by the National Trust. Since completion of the house in 1728, it has had an unfortunate history. Neither architect nor patron lived to see its completion; it then passed through a succession of heirs, being lived in only intermittently. Most damaging of all, in 1822 the central block was gutted by fire, and has remained an empty shell ever since. The Derby Stakes, also known as the Epsom Derby or the Derby, and as the Cazoo Derby for sponsorship reasons, is a Group 1 flat horse race in England open to three-year-old colts and fillies. Baron Hastings is a title that has been created three times. The first creation was in the Peerage of England in 1290, and is extant. The second creation was in the Peerage of England in 1299, and became extinct on the death of the first holder in c. 1314. The third creation was in the Peerage of England in 1461, and has been in abeyance since 1960. 1290 creation John Hastings was summoned to Parliament as Lord Hastings in 1290. He was the son of Henry de Hastings, who had been created ''Baron Hastings'' by Simon de Montfort in 1263. Melton (horse)
Melton (1882–1910) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a career that lasted from 1884 to 1886 he ran eighteen times and won eleven races. In 1885 he won the second two legs of the English Triple Crown, the Derby at Epsom and the St Leger at Doncaster. At the end of the 1886 season he was retired to stud where he had considerable success in both Italy and Great Britain. Background Melton was a small, but powerful and good-looking bay horse, bred by his owner George Manners Astley, 20th Baron Hastings (1857–1904) a country gentleman who named the colt after the village of Melton Constable in Norfolk. He was trained by Mathew Dawson at his Heath House stable at Newmarket, Suffolk. Melton was ridden in most of his races by the thirteen-time Champion Jockey Fred Archer.
