George H. Torney
Brigadier General George Henry Torney (June 1, 1850 – December 27, 1913) was a physician in the United States Navy and Army who served as the 21st Surgeon General of the United States Army. Torney was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1850. He was the son of John B. and Mary M. (Peacock) Torney. He began his education at Carroll University in New Windsor, Maryland and received his medical training at the University of Virginia – graduating in 1870 – and began his military career in the United States Navy as an assistant surgeon of the Navy in 1871. He resigned from the Navy in 1875 and was appointed first lieutenant assistant surgeon of the United States Army. During the Spanish–American War, he served on the hospital ship ''Relief'', transporting sick and injured soldiers between Cuba and Puerto Rico. 1906 San Francisco Earthquake
At 05:12 Pacific Standard Time on Wednesday, April 18, 1906, the coast of Northern California was struck by a major earthquake with an estimated moment magnitude of 7.9 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of XI (''Extreme''). High-intensity shaking was felt from Eureka on the North Coast to the Salinas Valley, an agricultural region to the south of the San Francisco Bay Area. Devastating fires soon broke out in San Francisco and lasted for several days. More than 3,000 people died, and over 80% of the city was destroyed. The events are remembered as one of the worst and deadliest earthquakes in the history of the United States. The death toll remains the greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in California's history and high on the lists of American disasters. United States Military Academy Grounds And Facilities
The United States Military Academy (West Point) and grounds were declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and due to the Revolutionary War history and the age and historic significance of the academy itself. The majority of the buildings in the central cadet area are historic. Geography West Point is located approximately north of New York City on the western bank of the Hudson River. The academy's geographic location and geologic formations have directly shaped its history. The California State Military Museum was the official Military museum of the State of California. It was located in the Old Sacramento State Historic Park at 1119 Second Street. A new site is under development and the museum is expected to reopen by 2019. Torney General Hospital was a US Army Hospital in Palm Springs, California, in Riverside County used during World War II. Parts of Torney General Hospital are now the Desert Regional Medical Center. In November 1945 Torney General Hospital was closed and the Federal Works Administration sold the site. The Torney General Hospital became the Palm Springs Desert Hospital and the Palm Springs Desert Medical Plaza. The hospital is now called the Desert Regional Medical Center.
