George Gallimore
George Arthur Gallimore (August 1886 – 1949) was an English professional association football, footballer who made more than 100 appearances in the Football League playing for Stoke City F.C., Stoke, Sheffield United F.C., Sheffield United and Birmingham City F.C., Birmingham. He played as a left-sided or centre forward (association football), forward. Career Gallimore was born in East Vale, Longton, Staffordshire. He played local football before signing for Stoke City F.C., Stoke in 1903. He became a useful forward for a struggling Stoke side, scoring 17 goals in 85 matches. With Stoke in financial difficulties in 1907–08 Stoke F.C. season, 1907–08, he and teammate Albert Sturgess joined Sheffield United F.C., Sheffield United in May 1908, but he failed to establish himself in his two seasons with the "Blades". Longton, Staffordshire
Longton is one of the six towns which amalgamated to form the county borough of Stoke-on-Trent in 1910, along with Hanley, Tunstall, Fenton, Burslem and Stoke-upon-Trent. History Longton ('long village') was a market town in the parish of Stoke in the county of Staffordshire. The town still has a market housed in an attractively renovated market hall. Coal miners in the Hanley and Longton area ignited the 1842 general strike and associated Pottery Riots. In March 1865, Longton and Lane End were incorporated as the Borough of Longton. On 1 April 1910, the town was federated into the county borough of Stoke-on-Trent. Arnold Bennett referred to Longton as ''Longshaw'', one of the "five towns" featured in his novels set in the Staffordshire Potteries. Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981. After the creation of the Premier League, the name First Division was given to the second-tier division (from 1992). The name ceased to exist after the 2003–04 First Division season. The 1908–09 season was the 38th season of competitive football in England. Overview Tottenham Hotspur played their first ever season in the Football League, gaining promotion to the First Division in the process. Spurs, along with Bradford Park Avenue entered the Second Division to replace Lincoln City and Stoke. This year started a new competition: the Charity Shield; a match between the champion of the Professional League vs. the champion of the Amateur League. The first championship went to Manchester United, in a replayed final against Queens Park Rangers.
