George Fawkes
Rear Admiral George Barney Hamley Fawkes CB, CVO, CBE (4 September 1903 – 26 July 1967) was a Royal Navy officer who became Flag Officer Submarines. Naval career Fawkes joined the Royal Navy in 1920. He became commanding officer of the submarine HMS ''H50'' in April 1932 and of the submarine HMS ''Otus'' in April 1935. He served in the Second World War becoming commander of the 8th Submarine Flotilla, based at Gibraltar, in December 1940 and Chief of Staff to the Rear-Admiral, Submarines in December 1943. A submarine (or sub) is a watercraft capable of independent operation underwater. It differs from a submersible, which has more limited underwater capability. The term is also sometimes used historically or colloquially to refer to remotely operated vehicles and robots, as well as medium-sized or smaller vessels, such as the midget submarine and the wet sub. Companions Of The Order Of The Bath
The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". He did not (as is commonly believed) revive the Order of the Bath, since it had never previously existed as an Order, in the sense of a body of knights who were governed by a set of statutes and whose numbers were replenished when vacancies occurred. Wilfrid Woods
Admiral Sir Wilfrid John Wentworth Woods, (9 February 1906 – 1 January 1975) was a Royal Navy officer who served in the Submarine Service in the Mediterranean. Early life Wilfrid Woods was born on 19 February 1906 at Southsea in Hampshire to colonial administrator Sir Wilfrid Woods KCMG, KBE and Ethel Maud Palmer. He attended school at Seabrooke Lodge at Hythe before going to the Royal Naval College, Osborne and the Britannia Royal Naval College. Royal Navy Pre-war service Woods was commissioned into the Royal Navy as a sub-lieutenant in 1926 and specialised in submarines. His first submarine command came in 1935 as a lieutenant in before promotion to lieutenant-commander in a year later. He then attended the Royal Navy Staff College in 1939. George Simpson (Royal Navy Officer)
Rear Admiral George Walter Gillow Simpson CB, CBE (6 June 1901 – 2 March 1972) was a Royal Navy officer who became Flag Officer Submarines. Naval career Educated at the Royal Naval College, Osborne and the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, Simpson was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1917. He became commanding officer of the submarine HMS L27 in 1935 and of the submarine HMS ''Porpoise'' in August 1938. He became commander of the 10th Submarine Flotilla, based at Malta in January 1941, during the Second World War, in which role his mission was to prevent enemy supplies reaching North Africa. He went on to be Commodore Western Approaches in April 1943. Simpson became Chief of the New Zealand Navy Staff in 1948, Flag Officer Germany in 1951 and Flag Officer Submarines in 1952. Home Fleet
The Home Fleet was a fleet of the Royal Navy that operated from the United Kingdom's territorial waters from 1902 with intervals until 1967. In 1967, it was merged with the Mediterranean Fleet creating the new Western Fleet. Before the First World War, it consisted of the four Port Guard ships. In 1905 it was disestablished, and from 1905 to 1907 remaining ships at a lesser state of readiness were split into the reserve divisions (Devonport Division, Nore Division, and Portsmouth Division). During the First World War, it comprised some of the older ships of the Royal Navy. During the Second World War, it was the Royal Navy's main battle force in European waters.
