George Down
George Down was an accountant and politician in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He began his civic career when he became part of the Booroodabin Divisional Board in 1880 and remained a member 1903. In that year the board became absorbed into the Town of Brisbane. On 31 March 1903 after a legislative change the Town of Brisbane became the City of Brisbane. He was Mayor of Brisbane from 1903 - 1916. Booroodabin Division is a former local government area of Queensland, Australia, located in inner northern Brisbane immediately north of the Brisbane CBD today. It existed from 1879 to 1903. History Booroodabin Division came into existence on 11 November 1879 with a population of 3462, as one of the original divisions created by the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879''. The Town of Brisbane was a local government area for Brisbane in Queensland, Australia from 1859 to 1903. History The Municipality of Brisbane was gazetted on 25 May 1859 and proclaimed by the Governor of New South Wales on 7 September 1859. The first local government area in Queensland, Brisbane was the only one incorporated prior to the establishment of Queensland as a separate colony. After the passing of the Municipal Institutions Act 1864 the area could establish a municipal council to administer the district – with powers relating to by-laws, to rating, to borrowings, to the control or regulation of public infrastructure and utilities, and to the provision of public amenities such as gardens and hospitals. The ''Fraser Coast Chronicle'' is an online newspaper serving the Fraser Coast area in Queensland, Australia. It was started as the Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser. History Charles Hardie Buzacott first published the ''Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser'' in Maryborough as a four-page tabloid, in his slab hut in Lennox Street in November 1860. It sold for sixpence and was read from Gayndah in the west and Childers in the north to Gympie in the south. In 1863, Buzacott sold his interests to William Swain Roberts and Joseph Robinson, who set out to "reflect the community's wants and opinions while boldly and distinctly enunciating our own views". The Brisbane Cricket Ground, commonly known as the Gabba, is a major sports stadium in Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, Australia.
