George Challies
George Holmes Challies (August 26, 1884 – March 15, 1976) was an Ontario merchant and political figure. He represented Dundas (provincial electoral district), Dundas and then Grenville (provincial electoral district), Grenville—Dundas in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, Conservative and then Progressive Conservative member from 1929 to 1955. He was born in Winchester, Ontario, the son of James George Challies and Margaret Bow. On May 27, 1914, he married Jean Kennedy Gibson, daughter of Matthew Gibson and Fanny Merkley. Jean died on March 27, 1929, at the age of 44 and was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Morrisburg, Ontario, Canada with her father and brother. Ontario Hydro, established in 1906 as the Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario, was a publicly owned electricity utility in the Province of Ontario. It was formed to build transmission lines to supply municipal utilities with electricity generated by private companies already operating at Niagara Falls, and soon developed its own generation resources by buying private generation stations and becoming a major designer and builder of new stations. Morrisburg is an unincorporated community in the Municipality of South Dundas, located in Eastern Ontario, Canada. History On November 11, 1813, the Battle of Crysler's Farm, at which a British force repelled an invading American army, took place near what was later to be called Morrisburg. United Empire Loyalist settlers settled in Dundas County, creating West Williamsburg and was part of the Williamsburg Canal project. Between 1843 and 1856, canals were built on the north side of the St. Lawrence River. West Williamsburg was renamed Morrisburg in 1851 in honour of Brockville, Ontario, politician James Morris, who was named the first Postmaster General of the United Province of Canada. Chesterville is a village in the township of North Dundas, within the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry. It is located north of Morrisburg, west of Cornwall and south-east of Ottawa. The village is situated along the South Nation River. History Early Settlement The land in what would become Dundas County was granted in 1784 to United Empire Loyalists, most of whom had fought with the King's Royal Regiment of New York during the American Revolution. George Smyth (Canadian Politician)
George Smyth (November 1, 1864 – 1938) was an Ontario farmer and political figure. He was elected in the 1926 provincial election representing Dundas in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Liberal-Prohibitionist member and sat until 1929. The 1926 election was largely fought on the Conservative government's proposal to repeal the ''Ontario Temperance Act''. He was born in Matilda Township, Canada West, the son of Oliver Smyth. He was educated in Morrisburg. In 1900, he married Mary Dickey, the daughter of a former county warden.
