George Brouwer
George Brouwer is the most recent former Victorian Ombudsman. He was appointed to the position in 2004. His term expired in March 2014. Concurrently with work as Ombudsman, was also head of Victoria's Office of Police Integrity. Mr Brouwer was educated at Aloysius College (Netherlands), Xavier College (Victoria), University of Melbourne and Australian National University. Mr Brouwer has the following qualifications: * Master of Laws (Australian National University) * Bachelor of Laws (University of Melbourne) * Bachelor of Arts (Hons) (University of Melbourne) * Graduate of the École Nationale d’Administration (Paris) * Barrister (Non-practising) ( Supreme Court, NSW and ACT; High Court of Australia). Ombudsman
An ombudsman (, also ,), ombud, ombuds, ombudswoman, ombudsperson or public advocate is an official who is usually appointed by the government or by parliament (usually with a significant degree of independence) to investigate complaints and attempt to resolve them, usually through recommendations (binding or not) or mediation. Ombudsmen sometimes also aim to identify systemic issues leading to poor service or breaches of people's rights. At the national level, most ombudsmen have a wide mandate to deal with the entire public sector, and sometimes also elements of the private sector (for example, contracted service providers). In some cases, there is a more restricted mandate, for example with particular sectors of society. More recent developments have included the creation of specialized children's ombudsmen. Harold Holt
Harold Edward Holt (5 August 190817 December 1967) was an Australian politician who served as the 17th prime minister of Australia from 1966 until his presumed death in 1967. He held office as leader of the Liberal Party. Holt was born in Sydney and moved to Melbourne in childhood, studying law at the University of Melbourne. Before entering politics he practised law and was a lobbyist for cinema operators. He was first elected to the House of Representatives at the age of 27, becoming a member of parliament (MP) for the division of Fawkner at a by-election in 1935. A member of the United Australia Party (UAP), Holt was made a minister without portfolio in 1939, when his mentor Robert Menzies became prime minister. His tenure in the ministry was interrupted by a brief stint in the Australian Army, which ended when he was recalled to cabinet following the deaths of three ministers in the 1940 Canberra air disaster.
