George Benson (footballer)
George Herdman Benson (26 June 1893 – 19 December 1974) was an English footballer who played as a winger in the Football League for Accrington Stanley, Blackburn Rovers, Stalybridge Celtic, Queen's Park Rangers, and Port Vale; he also played in the Lancashire Combination for Chorley. Career Benson played for Accrington Stanley, Blackburn Rovers, Stalybridge Celtic and Queen's Park Rangers, before joining Port Vale on a one-month trial in February 1924. He appeared at The Old Recreation Ground in a 2–0 defeat to Bristol City in a Second Division match on 9 February, and failed to impress. Garstang
Garstang is an ancient market town and civil parish within the Wyre borough of Lancashire, England. It is north of the city of Preston and the same distance south of Lancaster. In 2011, the parish had a total resident population of 4,268; the larger Garstang Built-up Area, which includes the adjoining settlements of Bonds and Cabus, had population of 6,779. Garstang is famous for being the world's first ever Fairtrade Town. Etymology Garstang is mentioned in the Domesday Book as ''Cherestanc in 1086''. The Third Division South of The Football League was a tier in the English football league system from 1921 to 1958. It ran in parallel with the Third Division North with clubs elected to the League or relegated from Division Two allocated to one or the other according to geographical position. Some clubs in the English Midlands shuttled between the Third Division South and the Third Division North according to the composition of the two leagues in any one season. This division was created in 1921 from the Third Division, formed one year earlier when the Football League absorbed the leading clubs from the Southern League.
