Geoffrey Lehmann
Geoffrey Lehmann (born 28 June 1940) is an Australian poet, children's writer, and tax lawyer. Lehmann grew up in McMahon's Point, Sydney, and attended the Shore School in North Sydney. He graduated in arts and law from the University of Sydney in 1960 and 1963 respectively. In 1961, he demonstrated in a student newspaper article that fellow student Robert Hughes had published plagiarised poetry by Terence Tiller and others, and a drawing by Leonard Baskin. Lehmann was the first Australian poet to be published by the London publishing house Faber and Faber. He received the 2015 Prime Minister's Literary Award for poetry. Lehmann has worked as a solicitor in his own small law firm, as an academic lawyer at the University of New South Wales, and as a corporate tax lawyer, having retired from PricewaterhouseCoopers. A poet is a person who studies and creates poetry. Poets may describe themselves as such or be described as such by others. A poet may simply be the creator ( thinker, songwriter, writer, or author) who creates (composes) poems ( oral or written), or they may also perform their art to an audience. The work of a poet is essentially one of communication, expressing ideas either in a literal sense (such as communicating about a specific event or place) or metaphorically. Created in 1961, ''ABR'' is an independent non-profit organisation that publishes articles, reviews, commentaries, essays, and new writing. The aims of the magazine are 'to foster high critical standards, to provide an outlet for fine new writing, and to contribute to the preservation of literary values and a full appreciation of Australia's literary heritage'. History and profile ''Australian Book Review'' was established by Max Harris and Rosemary Wighton as a monthly journal in Adelaide, Australia, in 1961. Robert Gray (poet)
Robert William Geoffrey Gray (born 23 February 1945) is an Australian poet, freelance writer, and critic. He has been described as "an Imagist without a rival in the English-speaking world" and "one of the contemporary masters of poetry in English". Biography Gray was born in Port Macquarie, grew up in Coffs Harbour and was educated in a country town on the north coast of New South Wales. He trained there as a journalist, and since then has worked in Sydney after settling in the 1970s as an editor, advertising copywriter, reviewer and buyer for bookshops. His first book of poems, ''Creekwater Journal'', was published in 1973. As a poet Gray is most notable for his keen visual imagery and intensely observed landscapes, known as a very skilful imagist. ''Hermes'' is the annual literary journal published by the University of Sydney Union. It is the oldest such journal in Australasia. History ''Hermes'' was established in 1886. The first issue of ''Hermes'' appeared in July 1886. Publication was suspended in 1942–1944, 1953, 1955, 1964, and 1970–1984.
