Artists from Genoa were influential during the 17th century. Many painters emigrated to either Venice, Florence, or Rome. Diego Velázquez
Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (baptized June 6, 1599August 6, 1660) was a Spanish painter, the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal, and of the Spanish Golden Age. He was an individualistic artist of the Baroque period (c.1600–1750). He began to paint in a precise tenebrist style, later developing a freer manner characterized by bold brushwork. In addition to numerous renditions of scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted scores of portraits of the Spanish royal family and commoners, culminating in his masterpiece ''Las Meninas'' (1656). Velázquez's paintings became a model for 19th-century realist and impressionist painters. In the 20th century, artists such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, and Francis Bacon paid tribute to Velázquez by re-interpreting some of his most iconic images. Bartolomeo Biscaino
Bartolomeo Biscaino (1632–1657) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, active in his native Genoa. Life He was the son, and pupil, of Giovanni Andrea Biscaino. He afterwards became a pupil of Valerio Castello. His career was cut short by the plague which visited Genoa, and to which his father and himself fell victims. The Dresden gallery once held three paintings, representing ''Woman taken in adultery'', ''Adoration by Magi'', and ''Circumcision of Christ''. Around 1650 Biscaino entered the workshop of Valerio Castello, and from roughly that year his first known work, which still finds him a clumsy and immature artist, was the canvas representing ''St Ferrando in the act of imploring the Virgin''. Giuseppe Palmieri (painter)
Giuseppe Palmieri (1674 - May 18, 1740) was an Italian painter of the late Baroque period. Palmieri was born in Genoa. Orphaned as a baby, he came into the care of an uncle. As a boy, after his uncle died, he was apprenticed to an unidentified Tuscan painter, with whom he travelled through Italy, including a long stay in Sicily. Returning to Genoa, he joined the large studio of Domenico Piola, where he first gained independent commissions. He was very religious, and completed without pay some of his works for the monasteries of the Capuchin Friars (now mostly preserved in the church of the Holy Conception in Genoa). Some pictures depicting hunting scenes were painted for King John V of Portugal. In this style of painting, he was influenced by Castiglione. He fathered many children. Carlo Antonio Tavella (1668–1738) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, active mainly in Genoa. Biography Tavella was born in Milan, the son of Domenico Tavella, a Genoese merchant, Domenico. He was initially the pupil of the painter Giuseppe Merati, then later of a painter by the name of Johann Gruembroech or Greuenbrech, also called ''il Solfarolo''. Giovanni Raffaello Badaracco
Giovanni Raffaele Badaracco (1648–1726) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period. He was born in Genoa, son and pupil of the painter Giuseppe Badaracco. After studying some time under his father he went to Rome, and entered the school of Carlo Maratta. He also painted in Naples and Venice, then returned to Genoa. Giuseppe Badaracco
Giuseppe Badaracco (1588–1657), also called “Il Sordo” (the Deaf), was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, active mainly in Genoa, in Liguria and in the island of Corsica. Born in Genoa into well-to-do family, he first studied classic literature, but moved into an apprenticeship with the painter Bernardo Strozzi, then Giovanni Andrea Ansaldo. He worked for some years in Florence, where he copied many of the works of Andrea del Sarto. Returning to Genoa (about 1625), he painted mainly for private customers. He worked also in Corsica (at that time part of the Republic of Genoa), where he painted locally influential paintings for some churches around Bastia. Filippo Parodi
Filippo Parodi (1630 – 22 July 1702) was an Italian sculptor of the Baroque period, "Genoa's first and greatest native Baroque sculptor". Biography Born in Genoa into a family of sculptors, Parodi developed his facility with wood, then transferred his mastery to marble in the 1670s. His two extended sojourns in Rome refined his style; he joined the studio of Bernini as an assistant (1655–1661), although he appears to have been influenced by Algardi and his pupil Ercole Ferrata. Later on returning to Genoa, he met the French Baroque sculptor Pierre Puget, who stayed in Genoa from 1661–1666. Parodi developed a large studio to handle a large number of commissions. Francesco Maria Schiaffino
Francesco Maria Schiaffino (1688 – 3 January 1763) was an Italian sculptor of the Rococo or late- Baroque, mainly active in his native city of Genoa. Born into a family of sculptors, including his older brother Bernardo Schiaffino. In 1721–24, he apprenticed in the Roman studio of Camillo Rusconi. Returning to Genoa, he executed such works as ''St Dominic'' for the Teatro Carlo Felice, and ''Pluto and Proserpine'' sculpted for the Palazzo Reale. Giovanni Andrea Ansaldo
Giovanni Andrea Ansaldo (1584 – August 18, 1638) was an Italian painter active mainly in Genoa. Life Ansaldo was born in Voltri, now part of the ''comune'' of Genoa, the son of a merchant. He trained under Orazio Cambiasi and possibly collaborated with Bernardo Strozzi. Two of his pupils were Giuseppe Badaracco and Bartolomeo Bassi. One of his descendants was Innocenzo Ansaldo of Pescia (February 12, 1734- February 16, 1816). He died in Genoa and was probably buried in the same Annunziata church.
