''Generationwhy'' is the debut studio album by American electronic music producer Zhu (musician), Zhu, released on July 29, 2016 by Columbia Records. The album features works and vocals from the likes of Maya Angelou, Jaymes Young, Nylo, Mitch Bell, Nikola Bedingfield, IN-Q, Adam Schmalholz, and Broods. The album followed after the success of ZHU's collaborative debut Extended play, EP ''Genesis Series'', released in 2015. Critical reception Upon release, ''Generationwhy'' received mixed reviews. ''The Guardian'' found ''Generationwhy'' an "at times, beguiling blend of mid-tempo electronic pop." Noting that ZHU successfully assimilated a lot of current Balearic dance music "influences into something distinctly his own", the review also argued that not all the songs transcended "the tropes of the genre that inspired them." Zhu (musician)
Steven Zhu, known mononymously as Zhu (; stylized in all caps; born April 28, 1989), is an American electronic music producer and singer who has been active since the beginning of 2014, signed to Mind of a Genius Records. Until mid-2014, Zhu remained anonymous, asking to be judged by his music alone. His debut album, '' Generationwhy'', was released on July 29, 2016 and first premiered at Coachella during his closing set in the Sahara Tent. Zhu's Coachella performance was praised, with a writer for the '' New York Observer'' suggesting that he could be "the next Daft Punk". Early life Zhu is of Chinese heritage and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. He played in jazz bands and orchestral practices at school, and later studied music during college. The album features works and vocals from the likes of Tokimonsta, Majid Jordan, and Tame Impala. The album followed the success of ZHU's collaborative debut studio album ''Generationwhy'', released in 2016. Critical reception Upon release, ''Ringos Desert'' received favorable reviews. ''Dancing Astronaut'' praised ''Ringos Desert'' saying that "Every song is polished to absolute perfection, each sound given dedicated space to exist like modern art in an exhibit. Tucked into the songs is a cheeky dose of western sonic flavor that seasons the entire album". Jaymes Young (born Jaymes McFarland; September 1, 1991) is an American singer-songwriter and musician. On September 9, 2013, he debuted his first extended play, ''Dark Star''. His debut album ''Feel Something'' was released on June 23, 2017. Career In 2013 he was signed to a recording contract with Atlantic Records and toured with the trip hop trio London Grammar. He released his second EP ''Habits of My Heart'' on September 28, 2014, on Atlantic Records and opened for Vance Joy on the latter's "Dream Your Life Away" tour. IN-Q or IN-Query, is the stage name of Adam Schmalholz, an American songwriter and National Poetry Slam champion from Los Angeles, California. Schmalholz describes his poetry as a reflection of his own experiences and life lessons. Broods is a New Zealand musical duo from Nelson, composed of Georgia Josiena Nott on lead vocals, with older brother and multi-instrumentalist Caleb Allan Joseph Nott on production and backing vocals. They released the single "Bridges", which went to No. 8 on the New Zealand singles chart, and signed with Capitol and Polydor Records. "Touch Me" is a song by Portuguese house music producer Rui da Silva and British singer-songwriter Cassandra Fox. The song began to gain popularity after being played in dance clubs in October 2000. The track was originally scheduled for release in December 2000, but it was postponed to avoid competing with songs that would experience sales surges resulting from the Christmas holiday period. It was eventually released on 1 January 2001. The single spent one week at number one on the UK Singles Chart and sold over 600,000 copies, earning a platinum certification from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). Gary James Kemp (born 16 October 1959) is an English singer, songwriter, musician and actor, best known as the lead guitarist, backing vocalist, and principal songwriter for the New Romantic band Spandau Ballet. Cassandra ("Cass") Fox is an English singer and songwriter. She is best known for writing and singing the 2001 number one hit single " Touch Me", which she co-produced with Rui Da Silva. Rui Da Silva (DJ)
Rui da Silva (born 25 April 1968) is a Portuguese producer and DJ, whose single " Touch Me" went to number one in the United Kingdom in 2001. At the time, he was the only Portuguese musician to have a hit in Britain, and hence was the first to score a chart-topping hit there. Career Silva started producing house music in 1992, just as club culture was getting established in Lisbon. Noticing the lack of dance music labels in Portugal, he teamed up with DJ Vibe to form Kaos Records, the first label in Portugal specialized in house and electronic music.
