Gene Whisnant (born December 8, 1943) is a Oregon Republican Party, Republican politician from the US state of Oregon. He serves in the Oregon House of Representatives representing Oregon's 53rd House district, District 53, which encompasses most of Deschutes County, Oregon, Deschutes County, including the cities of Redmond, Oregon, Redmond and Sisters, Oregon, Sisters, and portions of the city of Bend, Oregon, Bend. Early life and military career Whisnant was born in North Carolina, and attended West Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, Charlotte, later graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1966 with a bachelor's degree in journalism. He later received a master's degree in International Affairs from the University of Arkansas in 1976. West Mecklenburg High School, colloquially known as West Meck, is a high school located in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States. Sunriver is a census-designated place and planned residential and resort community in Deschutes County, Oregon, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 1,393. It is part of the Bend Metropolitan Statistical Area, located on the eastern side of the Deschutes River, about south of Bend at the base of the Cascade Range. Sunriver consists of residential homesites and common areas, recreational facilities, the Sunriver Resort and a commercial development known as The Village at Sunriver. The 2010 elections for the Oregon Legislative Assembly determined the composition of both houses for the 76th Oregon Legislative Assembly. The Republican and Democratic primary elections were on May 18, 2010, and the general election was held on November 2, 2010. Sixteen of the Oregon State Senate's thirty seats were up for election, as were all 60 seats of the Oregon House of Representatives. In the previous session, the Democrats held supermajorities in both chambers: 18–12 in the Senate and 36–24 in the House. Following the election, Republicans reduced the Democratic majority to 16–14 in the Senate and gained enough seats in the House to make the chamber evenly divided between the parties, 30–30. The Oregon State Senate is the upper house of the statewide legislature for the US state of Oregon. Along with the lower chamber Oregon House of Representatives it makes up the Oregon Legislative Assembly. There are 30 members of the state Senate, representing 30 districts across the state, each with a population of 127,700. The state Senate meets in the east wing of the Oregon State Capitol in Salem.
