Gene Hiser
Gene Taylor Hiser (born December 11, 1948 in Baltimore, Maryland) is an American former professional baseball outfielder who played five seasons for the Chicago Cubs from through . He was drafted in the 1st round (19th pick) of the 1970 amateur draft out of the University of Maryland. Hiser was an American Baseball Coaches Association All-American in and a Sporting News First-Team All-American selection in 1970. Hiser went right to the Triple-A Cubs affiliate in Tacoma in 1970, hitting .250 in 232 at-bats. He played briefly with Tacoma in 1971, and spent a portion of the season on active military duty prior to joining the Cubs for 17 games, hitting .207. Hiser split his time in 1972 between Wrigley Field in Chicago and in Triple-A Wichita, hitting just .192 in 56 big-league at-bats. 1973 was his first and only full-season in the majors, as Hiser saw action in 100 games, batting .174. Outfielder
An outfielder is a person playing in one of the three defensive positions in baseball or softball, farthest from the batter. These defenders are the left fielder, the center fielder, and the right fielder. As an outfielder, their duty is to catch fly balls and ground balls then to return them to the infield for the out or before the runner advances, if there are any runners on the bases. As an outfielder, they normally play behind the six players located in the field. By convention, each of the nine defensive positions in baseball is numbered. The outfield positions are 7 (left field), 8 (center field) and 9 (right field). These numbers are shorthand designations useful in baseball scorekeeping and are not necessarily the same as the squad numbers worn on player uniforms. Wichita Aeros
The Wichita Aeros were an American minor league baseball franchise based in Wichita, Kansas, that played in the Triple-A American Association from 1970 through 1984. The Aeros were established as an expansion franchise when the Association grew from six to eight clubs after the 1969 season. They were affiliated with the Cleveland Indians (1970–71), Chicago Cubs (1972–80), Texas Rangers (1981), Montreal Expos (1982–83) and Cincinnati Reds (1984). The Aeros led the league in attendance in 1970 and from 1972–74, but a series of last-place teams during their years as a Cubs farm club drove down attendance throughout the rest of the 1970s. Schaumburg ( ) is a village mostly in Cook County and partly in DuPage County in northeastern Illinois, United States. Per the 2020 Census, the population was 78,723. Milton Steven Pappas (May 11, 1939 – April 19, 2016) was an American professional baseball player. He played in Major League Baseball as a right-handed pitcher from through . Nicknamed "Gimpy", the 17-year veteran pitched for the Baltimore Orioles (–), Cincinnati Reds (–), Atlanta Braves (–) and Chicago Cubs (–). A control specialist, Pappas pitched in 520 games, starting 465, with 209 wins, 164 losses, 43 shutouts, 1,728 strikeouts and a 3.40 ERA in 3,186 innings pitched. Men's Professional Softball Leagues
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, several men's professional slow-pitch softball leagues were formed in the United States to build on the growth and talent in the booming men's amateur game during this period. The American Professional Slo-Pitch League (APSPL) was the first such league, launching in an era of experimentation in professional sports leagues. The APSPL was formed in 1977 by former World Football League executive Bill Byrne, who would go on to found the Women's Professional Basketball League. Former New York Yankees star Whitey Ford was the first APSPL commissioner.
