Municipal police, city police, or local police are law enforcement agencies that are under the control of local government. This includes the municipal government, where it is the smallest administrative subdivision. They receive funding from the city budget, and may have fewer legal powers than the "state paid" police. These police forces usually report to a mayor or a local police board. Historical development Historically, the role of the municipal police of local civic protection was carried out by municipal guards. Today, some formations of municipal police still carry the name of the city/communal/municipal guard. The Gemeindewachkörper (german: Community Security Corps) are the municipal police forces of communities in Austria. They are called ''Stadtpolizei'' (for city police). All communities, except statutory cities, are allowed to maintain their own municipal police. ''Gemeindepolizei'' (''GemPo'') is the German name for a municipal law enforcement agency. This article deals with the municipal police forces of Nazi Germany. Municipalities with more than 2,000 residents, not having a state police presence, had to have a municipal police department. The mayors were police commissioners. Under them the municipal police departments were led by professional chiefs of police. Towns with over 10,000 residents having a municipal police department were also obliged to have a municipal criminal investigation division. ''Stadtpolizei'' were municipal police forces of some cities in Germany. The term ''Stadtpolizei'' is still used in some German states to denote local order enforcement offices of municipal authorities with limited police powers.
