Geert Bakker
Geert Alle Bakker (15 January 1921 in Appingedam – 7 August 1993 in Warmond) was a sailor from the Netherlands, who represented his country at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. With crew Pieter Keijzer and Harald de Vlaming Bakker took the 5th place in the Soling. Since in 1980 The Netherlands did boycott the Moscow Olympic Games Bakker again in the Soling represented his National Olympic Committee under the Dutch NOC flag. This time with crew Dick Coster and his son Steven Bakker They took again 5th place. From 1976 till 1979 Geert was president of the International Soling Association. After a brain stroke in 1983 he stayed close involved with Soling Sailing however he specialized in judging. Controversy Several countries did boycott the 1980 Summer Olympics, others like France did not go since they found the competition devaluated. Appingedam
Appingedam (; gos, n Daam) is a city and former municipality in the northeastern Netherlands. Although there is no certainty as to the exact age of Appingedam, historical research demonstrates that the place in which the city would eventually be built had been inhabited for over a millennium. Specifically, the area in which the earliest traces of human settlements have been reported is the Wierde, a quarter located in the northern part of the city centre. Today, a narrow, winding street by the same name runs along the waterfront as a living testimony to the times gone by. International Soling Association
The International Soling Association, ISA, was founded as soon as the Soling became an International class in 1967. Originally an "Owners Club" became a very self-supporting organization who provided great support for the whole Soling community and guarded the Soling one-design during her Olympic tour of duty as well as in the present time. Dutch Olympic Sailing Team
The Dutch were in most of the Olympic sailing competitions represented by the Dutch Olympic Sailing Team. The selection of the members of the team was done by the Koninklijk Nederlands Watersport Verbond (KNWV) or its predecessor. With the exception of 1908 and 1912 there were always Dutch sailors willing to compete at this pinnacle of competitive sailing. Even in 1956 in Melbourne the Dutch team was willing and able to perform. However at the last possible moment the Dutch NOC and the Dutch government (together with Switzerland and Spain), ordered a boycott of these games. This boycott was a result of the presence in Hungary of the Soviet Union after the Hungarian Revolution. The KNWV was not in favor of this boycott. Sailing At The 1980 Summer Olympics
Sailing/Yachting is an Olympic sport starting from the Games of the 1st Olympiad ( 1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece). With the exception of 1904 and the canceled 1916 Summer Olympics, sailing has always been included on the Olympic schedule. The Sailing program of 1980 consisted of a total of six sailing classes (disciplines). For each class seven races were scheduled from 19 to 29 July 1980 of the coast of Tallinn (district of Pirita, in present-day Estonia), in that time and annexed part of the USSR at the Baltic Sea. The sailing was done on the triangular type Olympic courses. Venue According to the IOC statutes the contests in all sport disciplines must be held either in, or as close as possible to the city which the IOC has chosen.
