Gee Street
Gee Street Records was a British hip hop record label started by Jon Baker in 1985. The label's name came from its original location, a converted warehouse on Gee Street (off Old Street) in London, EC1. Between 1980 and 1984, label head Baker lived in New York City. After returning to London in 1984, he became a hip-hop promoter, and in 1985 opened Gee Street Records and began releasing white-label dance and hip-hop records. Many of these broke new ground. The label developed a roster of prominent domestic UK acts, including DJ Richie Rich, Outlaw Posse, and Stereo MC's, and US acts, including P.M. Dawn, Doug E. Fresh, Gravediggaz, and New Kingdom. In 1990, Gee Street was acquired by Chris Blackwell's Island Records. After Blackwell left Island and the PolyGram group in 1998, Baker bought back Gee Street and sold it to Richard Branson's fledgling V2 Records. The label was shuttered in 2001. In 2006, V2 sold its American catalogue, including Gee Street, to Sheridan Squar ...

Production The album was produced by Scott Harding, New Kingdom, and the Lumberjacks. It was recorded in Manhattan. Critical reception ''Vibe'' called the album "a celebration of the black-light world of the subconscious," noting the "drug-induced lyrics swimming through a jazzmospheric haze." ''Spin'' thought that the group "could be Cypress Hill's geeky, inward-peeking younger brothers." The ''Calgary Herald'' deemed the album "a happenin' hip-hop funky fury." ''The Province'' considered it "a record that favors low, thick, swinging rhythms over big beats, storytelling over boasting, characterization over gangsta posturing." The ''Boston Herald'' wrote that the group "turn a pop-music grab bag, with samples of Miles Davis, Grand Funk and others, into ... metallic R&B." AllMusic wrote that "songs like 'Mad ...

33-45-78
''33-45-78'' is the 1989 debut album by the Stereo MC's. It was recorded on a shoestring budget with DJ Cesare as drummer and Cath Coffey as backing vocalist. ''Billboard'' declared that 33-45-78 proved the band "capable of wildly imaginative sampling". Songstuff reviewers called the album "a labour of love that involved hand-making drum loops in the most rudimentary of studios" and while admitting that the sound was raw, noted that its originality was enough that it drew attention from the Jungle Brothers who would later feature on the band's more polished second album, ''Supernatural''. The title "33-45-78" refers to the three common RPM speed settings on a player of gramophone records A phonograph record (also known as a gramophone record, especially in British English), or simply a record, is an analog sound storage medium in the form of a flat disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove.
