''33-45-78'' is the 1989 debut album by the Stereo MC's. It was recorded on a shoestring budget with DJ Cesare as drummer and Cath Coffey as backing vocalist. ''Billboard'' declared that 33-45-78 proved the band "capable of wildly imaginative sampling". Songstuff reviewers called the album "a labour of love that involved hand-making drum loops in the most rudimentary of studios" and while admitting that the sound was raw, noted that its originality was enough that it drew attention from the Jungle Brothers who would later feature on the band's more polished second album, ''Supernatural''. Stereo MC's are an English Hip hop music, hip hop/electronic dance music, electronic dance group which formed in Nottingham, England, in 1985. They had an international Top 40, top 20 hit with their single "Connected (Stereo MCs song), Connected". After releasing eight albums for Island Records, K7, Graffiti Recordings, and Pias, they formed the label Connected with Terranova to release their own material and that of other artists within the house/techno/electronic medium. Gee Street Records was a British hip hop record label started by Jon Baker in 1985. The label's name came from its original location, a converted warehouse on Gee Street (off Old Street) in London, EC1. Between 1980 and 1984, label head Baker lived in New York City. After returning to London in 1984, he became a hip-hop promoter, and in 1985 opened Gee Street Records and began releasing white-label dance and hip-hop records. Many of these broke new ground. The label developed a roster of prominent domestic UK acts, including DJ Richie Rich, Outlaw Posse, and Stereo MC's, and US acts, including P.M. Dawn, Doug E. Fresh, Gravediggaz, and New Kingdom. In 1990, Gee Street was acquired by Chris Blackwell's Island Records. Catherine Muthoni Coffey is a British singer who was one of the earliest members of British hip hop band Stereo MCs. The single " Elevate My Mind", from the Stereo MCs album ''Supernatural'', in which Coffey was the backing vocalist, was the first British rap single to reach the US pop charts. Jungle Brothers are an American hip hop trio composed of Michael Small (Mike Gee), Nathaniel Hall (Afrika Baby Bam), and Sammy Burwell (DJ Sammy B). Known as the pioneers of the fusion of jazz, hip-hop, and house music, they were the first hip-hop group to collaborate with a house-music producer.
