Gay Cable Network
Gay Cable Network (GCN) was one of the first cable television networks which openly appealed to a gay and lesbian audience. It was established in 1982 in New York City by Lou Maletta, was broadcast on Manhattan Cable Television channel 35 and wound down operations in 2000–2001. It initially broadcast a series titled ''Men in Films'', which explored male erotica, and evolved to host a wider variety of content, including news and current affairs programs which covered political developments affecting the LGBT community and the AIDS/HIV epidemic. Throughout its time, GCN provided coverage of the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, with on-floor correspondents interviewing candidates and delegates, as well as coverage of the 1987 and 1993 LGBT rights marches on Washington. Louis Phillip "Lou" Maletta Jr. (December 14, 1936 – November 2, 2011) was an American media executive and LGBT rights activist. 1st GLAAD Media Awards
The 1st GLAAD Media Awards was held by GLAAD on April 29, 1990 at the Time & Life Building, New York City to honor “fair, accurate and inclusive” representations of LGBT individuals in the media during the 1989 season. The awards' first year was a small event, with only 34 nominees and seven categories. The first award looked different from the current one - it was a small, square-shaped crystal sculpture that had an etching of the year it was presented, along with the title of the award "GLAAD Media Award". The awards were awarded according to criteria similar to those on other awards shows, but with the added requirement of somehow addressing LGBT+ issues and representation. GLAAD honored Phil Donahue as the Media Person of the Year for his continued coverage of the LGBT community, and GLAAD co-founder Vito Russo joined him onstage. GLAAD Media Awards
The GLAAD Media Award is an accolade bestowed by GLAAD to recognize and honor various branches of the media for their outstanding representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and the issues that affect their lives. In addition to film and television, the Awards also recognize achievements in other branches of the media and arts, including theatre, music, journalism and advertising. Honorees are selected by a process involving over 700 GLAAD Media Award voters and volunteers and are evaluated using four criteria: "Fair, Accurate and Inclusive Representations" of the LGBT community, "Boldness and Originality" of the project, significant "Cultural Impact" on mainstream culture, and "Overall Quality" of the project. Dyke TV was founded and created by Ana Maria Simo, playwright and cofounder of Lesbian Avengers; Linda Chapman, theater director and producer; and Mary Patierno, independent film and video maker. The first episode was aired on June 8, 1993, in New York City. The last episode aired in 2005. Dyke TV produced national documentary television programming. New episodes were produced weekly for the shows 12 years on air, and ran for a half hour. In January 2005, the last five episodes ran for an hour. It was broadcast on nationwide cable TV weekly from 1993 to 2005, reaching over 6.5 million households nationwide, as well as being screened at national and international film festivals. Logo TV (often shortened to Logo, and stylized as Logo.) is an American basic cable channel owned by Paramount Media Networks, a division of Paramount Global. It was founded by former MTV executive Matt Farber. Its first president, Brian Graden, was named by '' Out'' as the 15th most powerful gay person in America in 2007. Fales Library And Special Collections
New York University's Fales Library and Special Collections is located on the third floor of the Elmer Holmes Bobst Library at 70 Washington Square South between LaGuardia Place and the Schwartz Plaza, in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City.
