Gauci is a surname in use mainly in the Republic of Malta belonging to one of the most ancient and noble families on the island. It originates from the word ''Għawdxi'' (; meaning ''Gozitan''), in reference to a man from Gozo. According to the ''Dictionary of American Family Names'', it originated in Italy, flourished in Malta and from Malta spread to the UK, US, Canada and Australia with the Maltese diaspora; this would be due to the immigration (and also exile) of large numbers of people from Italy to Malta, although the name still appears in Italy. However, according to Professor Joseph Aquilina, Malta's foremost specialist in Maltese etymology and author of the encyclopaedic ''Maltese–English Dictionary'', the surname is a Maltese original formation, originating in the medieval notarial transcription of the word "''Għawdxi''", meaning Gozitan or from the island of Gozo. Natalie Gauci
Natalie Rose Gauci (born 26 November 1981) is an Australian musician, producer and teacher. Gauci undertook music tuition at the Victorian College of the Arts, formed her own band that played gigs in Melbourne, while also working as a music teacher. After an appearance on national radio station Triple J's talent contest, '' Unearthed'', she successfully auditioned for the fifth series of '' Australian Idol'' in 2007 and went on to win the series. Gauci subsequently signed a record deal with Sony BMG Australia and in November that year released her debut single, " Here I Am", which reached number two on the ARIA Singles Chart and gained a gold accreditation. Kylie Gauci (born 1 January 1985) is an Australian Paralympic 2-point wheelchair basketball player. She participated in the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, where she won a silver medal; in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, where she won a bronze medal, and the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, where she won a second silver medal. Gauci represented Australia at the 2002, 2006 and 2010 World Championships, and was named to the World All Star 5 at the World Championships in Amsterdam in 2006. Darren Gauci (born 26 December 1965, in Melbourne, Australia) is a former Australian jockey. Racing career Gauci was one of Australia's most successful and durable jockeys. He won the Senior Victorian Jockeys Premiership in 1983–84, 1985–86 and 1990–91. He came close to winning Australian racing's greatest prize on three occasions, with seconds in the Melbourne Cup on Chagemar (1984), Super Impose (1989) and on a Jeune (2005). Gauci won 35 Group 1 races. For several years, Gauci also rode with great success in Hong Kong. Tony Gauci
Tony Gauci (6 April 1944 – 29 October 2016) was the proprietor of Mary's House, a clothes shop in Tower Road, Sliema, Malta, who was a witness in the prosecution of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi in relation to the Lockerbie Bombing. According to evidence given at the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing trial in 2000, Gauci sold clothing that was found among the wreckage, and determined by investigators to have been in the same suitcase as the improvised explosive device (IED) that brought the aircraft down. Gauci's account as a witness linked Libyan intelligence officer Abdelbaset al-Megrahi directly to the explosion, and was therefore important in the conviction of Megrahi on 31 January 2001. Gauci died on 29 October 2016, in Swieqi, Malta at the age of 75. Maxim Gauci
Maxim Gauci (11 February 1774 – 3 November 1854), born Massimo Gauci, was a Maltese lithographer and painter who was active in the United Kingdom in the 19th century. He was an early exponent of lithography for botanical illustration. Life Gauci was born in Valletta, Malta on 11 February 1774. He studied painting under Michele Busuttil, and was later sent to the Accademia di San Luca in Rome on the recommendation of Grand Master Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc. Gauci eventually moved to Paris, and married there in 1804. While he was there, he was known as Maxime Gauci and he worked in the studio of Jean-Baptiste Isabey. He was father of William Gauci, another printer, and the landscape painter Paul Gauci. Gauci travelled to Egypt and the Middle East before settling in London in 1809. He never went back to Malta, but he was often visited by his relatives and other Maltese people. Gauci Tower
Gauci Tower ( mt, Torri Gauci, it, Torre Gauci) is a tower in Naxxar, Malta. It was built before 1548 by the Gauci family. Today, the tower is in good condition. History Gauci Tower was built sometime before 1548 by Francesco Gauci to protect his family from corsair raids. Construction cost a total of 400 scudi. In 1548, it was requisitioned by the Order of Saint John, who ruled the Maltese Islands, to house the Captain of the Naxxar militia. Gauci petitioned against this move, and the tower was returned to him on 16 May 1548. Eventually, the Order built the nearby Captain's Tower to house the Captain of the militia. The tower is quite small, and it has a square plan, with its lower half being slightly more pronounced. Redento Maria Gauci
Redento Maria Gauci, O. Carm. (27 December 1920 – 10 February 1978) was a Maltese Carmelite bishop who became the Prelate of Chuquibamba in Peru. Gauci was born on in Valletta Malta on 27 December 1920. In 1943 he was ordained a priest of the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel by Bishop Emanuel Galea. Gauci was one of the founders of the community in Fgura Malta where they established a church dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel which later eventually became a parish in 1965. In 1949 Father Gauci left for Peru with another Carmelite priest. They became the first Maltese Carmelite missionaries in Latin America. Life and career Born in Malta, where she began her voice training, she completed her studies in the ''Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi'' of Milan, Italy. After winning a few international prizes, she made her professional debut in Bologna in Francis Poulenc's ''La voix humaine'', in 1984.
