Gasparilla Distance Classic
The Gasparilla Distance Classic is a road race which is held in late February or early March on Bayshore Boulevard in Tampa, Florida. Over 30,000 competitors participate each year. It is named after the Gasparilla Pirate Festival, which takes place on Tampa's Bayshore Boulevard a few weeks earlier. History The Gasparilla Distance Classic Association was established in 1978 dedicated specifically to raising funds for charitable youth organizations and running programs in the Tampa Bay area. Its mission is carried out through the administration of the annual Publix Super Markets Gasparilla Distance Classic Race Weekend and Jr. Gasparilla Distance Classic. Since the first running of the Gasparilla Distance Classic in February 1978, $5.9 million has been donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa, Girls Inc. of Pinellas, The Friends of Tampa Parks & Recreation and other running programs. Michael Musyoki
Michael Musyoki (born May 28, 1956) is a retired long-distance runner from Kenya. He won the bronze medal in 10,000 metres at the 1984 Summer Olympics. Running career Collegiate Musyoki was recruited by University of Texas at El Paso, a school which was building a star-studded team of distance-runners in the late 1970s. Suleiman Nyambui and Musyoki were UTEP's two premier foreign distance-runner recruits at the time, and finished in first and second place respectively in the 10,000 metre race at the 1979 NCAA Outdoor Track Championships. Valdenor Dos Santos
Valdenor Pereira dos Santos (born 21 December 1969) is a Brazilian former long-distance runner. Born in São Raimundo Nonato, dos Santos started running professionally at the age of 15. He featured in four editions of the World Championships during the 1990s but never in the Olympics, coming closest in 1996 when he seemed to be in the team for Atlanta, only for a change in the qualification rules to then rule him out. An 11-time national champion in long-distance events, dos Santos completed the 5,000 & 10,000 metres double at the 1991 South American Championships. His successes in road race events include back to back wins at the Gasparilla Distance Classic in Tampa. He won a silver medal for Brazil in the 10,000 metres at the 1995 Pan American Games and also that year ran the Carlsbad 5000 race in 13:30 to set a South American record in the 5 km which still stands. Jill Boltz
Jill Boltz (née Hunter, born 14 October 1966) is an English former distance runner who represented Great Britain at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. She won a silver medal in the 10,000 metres at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. In 1991, she broke the World Best for 10 miles, with 51:41 in New York City. She also twice won the AAA Championships 10,000 metres title (1989, 1995). John Halvorsen
John Halvorsen (born 17 August 1966) is a retired Norwegian long-distance runner who specialized in 10,000 metres and cross-country running. He represented IF Minerva. In 10,000 m he finished sixteenth at the 1988 Summer Olympics, twelfth at the 1990 European Championships and nineteenth at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Elizabeth Nuttall (née Lynch, formerly McColgan; born 24 May 1964) is a Scottish former middle-distance and long-distance track and road-running athlete. Ingrid Kristiansen (née Christensen on 21 March 1956) is a Norwegian former athlete. She was one of the best female long-distance runners during the 1980s. She is a former world record holder in the 5000 metres, 10,000 metres and the marathon (at one point in time she held those records simultaneously). John Treacy
John Treacy (born 4 June 1957 in Villierstown, County Waterford) is an Irish Olympian and former athlete, now a sporting administrator. Athletic career Treacy attended St Anne's Post-Primary School in Cappoquin, County Waterford, Ireland, running more than seven miles to school every morning. He graduated from Providence College in the United States. In 1978 and 1979 he won the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Glasgow, Scotland and Limerick, Ireland respectively. At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles he won a silver medal in the marathon, placing Ireland 33rd on the medals table.
