Garvan McCarthy
Garvan McCarthy (born 3 September 1980) is an Irish former hurler. At club level he played with Sarsfields and was also a member of the Cork senior hurling team. He usually lined out as a forward. Career McCarthy first came to prominence at juvenile and underage levels with the Sarsfields club before eventually joining the club's senior team. He was a member of the club's extended panel when Sarsfields won County Senior Championship titles in 2008 and 2010. McCarthy first appeared on the inter-county scene as part of the Cork team that won the All-Ireland Minor Championship title in 1998. He was drafted onto the Cork senior hurling team in 2004 and was a non-playing substitute when Cork beat Kilkenny in the 2004 All-Ireland final. McCarthy was released from the panel during the 2005 season. Sarsfields GAA (Cork)
Sarsfields GAA is a hurling club is based in the Riverstown and Glanmire area of County Cork. The club plays in the Imokilly division of Cork GAA. They have won six County Championships, 1951, 1957, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014. They have also won three Minor County Championships, 2007, 2008 and 2014. The club derives its name for the Irish Jacobite and soldier Patrick Sarsfield, 1st Earl of Lucan. County Championship history While the club reached a number of championship semi-finals prior to 1936, it wasn't until the 1936 Cork Senior Hurling Championship before the club contested their first final. They lost out to Glen Rovers that year. 1940 would be the next time they would make final, again losing out to Glen Rovers. The 1998 All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship was the 68th staging of the All-Ireland Minor Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1928. The championship began on 22 April 1998 and ended on 13 September 1998. Clare entered the championship as the defending champions, however, they were beaten by Cork in the Munster final. On 13 September 1998, Cork won the championship following a 2-15 to 1-09 defeat of Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final. This was their 17th All-Ireland title overall and their first title since 1995. The 2010 Cork Senior Hurling Championship was the 122nd staging of the Cork Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Cork County Board in 1887. National Hurling League
The National Hurling League is an annual Inter county, inter-county hurling competition featuring teams from Ireland and England. Founded in 1925 by the Gaelic Athletic Association, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation within the league system. The league has 35 teams divided into six divisions, with either five or six teams in each division. Promotion and relegation between these divisions is a central feature of the league. Although primarily a competition for Irish teams, teams from England – currently Lancashire GAA, Lancashire, London GAA, London and Warwickshire GAA, Warwickshire – also take part, while in the past New York GAA, New York also fielded a team for the latter stages of the league.
