Township (Taiwan)
Townships are the third-level administrative subdivisions of counties of the Republic of China (Taiwan), along with county-administered cities. After World War II, the townships were established from the following conversions on the Japanese administrative divisions: Although local laws do not enforce strict standards for classifying them, generally urban townships have a larger population and more business and industry than rural townships, but not to the extent of county-administered cities. Under townships, there is still the village as the fourth or basic level of administration. Pingtung County
Pingtung County is a county located in southern Taiwan. It has a warm tropical monsoon climate and is known for its agriculture and tourism. Kenting National Park, Taiwan's oldest national park, is located in the county. The county seat is Pingtung City. Name The name ''Pingtung'' means "east of Banping mountain", referring to a nearby mountain known as Banping mountain (). Jiaruipu Temple
The Jiaruipu Temple (), also known as the Kanapo Temple, is a Makatao temple in Gaoshu Township, Pingtung County, Taiwan. History The temple is in the northeast of Taishan Village, Gaoshu Township, located in a rural region. It is the religious center for the local Makatao people. On April 16, 2011, the Makatao of Gaoshu, Neipu, and Wanluan conducted a protest at the temple with the goal of lobbying the Republic of China's Council of Indigenous Peoples to recognize them as Plains Aborigines, and established Makatao Association. Chen Chi-nan
Chen Chi-nan (; born 29 October 1947) is a Taiwanese anthropologist. He led the Council of Cultural Affairs from 2004 to 2006. He was named Director of National Palace Museum in 2018 and served until 2019. Education Chen was born in Pingtung County in 1947. He earned a bachelor's degree in geography from National Taiwan Normal University. Chen subsequently received a master's degree in anthropology from National Taiwan University and a doctorate in the subject from Yale University. He then worked as a researcher at the Academia Sinica and taught anthropology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the University of Virginia. After returning to Taiwan, Chen joined the college of humanities and social sciences at National Chiao Tung University, where he later became dean. Political career Chen was named the vice chairman of the Council for Cultural Affairs from 1994 to 1997. The Ministry of Culture (MOC, ) is the ministry of the Republic of China (Taiwan) that promotes cultural and creative industries. The ministry also maintains thNational Repository of Cultural Heritage History Established in 1981 by Executive Yuan, the ministry was initially called the Council for Cultural Affairs (CCA). The council was upgraded to ministerial level in May 2012 under the name Ministry of Culture. The ministry was inaugurated on 21 May 2012, in a ceremony attended by President Ma Ying-jeou, Premier Sean Chen and several prominent artists, including poet Chou Meng-tieh, film director Li Hsing and singer Lo Ta-yu. Chung Li-ho
Chung Li-ho ( (pinyin Zhong Lihe), Hakka transliteration: Chûng Lî-fò or Tsûng Li-fô) December 15, 1915 – August 4, 1960, was a writer from Taiwan famous mainly for fiction. He was a Liudui Hakka (), born in Gaoshu Township, Pingtung in 1915, who moved with his parents to a newly purchased fruit and coffee plantation in Meinong in around 1932. Eloping with a woman because their same-surname relationship was taboo in their community, he resided in Japanese-occupied China - Shenyang and Beijing -between 1938 and 1946. He died of pulmonary tuberculosis at the age of 44 in Meinong whilst revising his last and possibly finest work, a novella entitled "Rain" (). Legacy There is a Chung Li-ho Museum, located in Meinong, Kaohsiung is dedicated to Chung. His life has been dramatized as '' China, My Native Land'', a 1980 film directed by Li Hsing, featuring theme and other songs by Teresa Teng.
