Gangadhar
Gangadhar (1936–2003) was an Indian actor known for his work in Kannada cinema. A character actor who transitioned from stage to films in the mid-1960s, he had a brief period of success when his performances in social-dramas such as '' Gejje Pooje'' (1969), '' Sharapanjara'' (1971) and '' Seetha'' (1970) were noted. In addition to the former two, he starred in '' Katha Sangama'' (1975) and ''Ranganayaki'' (1981), all of which were directed by Puttanna Kanagal. Other films he starred in include ''Nanna Thamma'' (1970), ''Aliya Geleya'' (1971) and ''Bhale Adrushtavo Adrushta'' (1972). Gangadhar returned to stage in the 1980s after film opportunities failed to come his way; poor health condition led him to retire from acting in 1995, when he was aged 59. Gangadhar appeared in a total of 80 Kannada-language films and was awarded the Rajyotsava Award by the government of Karnataka in recognition of his contribution to Kannada cinema. Shubraveshti Ramaswamiah Seetharama Sharma (1 December 1933 – 5 June 1985), known popularly as S. R. Puttanna Kanagal, was an Indian filmmaker known for his work in Kannada cinema. He is often considered one of Kannada cinema's most influential filmmakers. Background and personal life Puttanna Kanagal was born to Ramaswamaiah and Subbamma in Kanagal, a village in the erstwhile Kingdom of Mysore into a poor family. As he hailed from a poor brahmin family, he had to endure hardships and struggled to get a decent job. He worked as a teacher, salesman and even as a cleaner. ''Yaava Janmada Maitri'' ( kn, ಯಾವ ಜನ್ಮದ ಮೈತ್ರಿ) is a 1972 Kannada language romantic drama film directed by Geethapriya and starring Gangadhar and Kalpana in the lead roles. The film is a direct screen adaptation of the novel "Jeevana Chaduranga" written by the novelist Ma. Bhi. She. Actress Vaishali Kasaravalli made her debut in this film, opposite comedian Narasimharaju. The film was remade in Telugu in 1973 as '' Sarada'', in Tamil in 1973 as ''Radha'' and in Hindi in 1975 as '' Dulhan''. Besides direction, Geethapriya also wrote the lyrics as well as the screenplay and dialogues and won Karnataka State Film Award for the year 1972 for this story. Gejje Pooje is a 1969 Indian Kannada language film directed by Puttanna Kanagal and produced by Rashi Brothers. The film stars Kalpana, Gangadhar and Leelavathi in the lead roles. Sharapanjara
''Sharapanjara'' ( en, Cage of Arrows) is a 1971 Indian Kannada language film directed by Puttanna Kanagal, based on a novel by Triveni of the same name, and starring Kalpana and Gangadhar in lead roles. This film is considered one of the best Kannada movies ever made. Triveni's novel was richly visual and Puttanna not only stayed faithful to the novel on screen but also retained most of the novel's dialogues and credited Triveni for them. The film won the award for Best Feature Film in Kannada at the 20th National Film Awards in 1972. ''Katha Sangama'' () is a 1976 Indian Kannada-language anthology film, directed by Puttanna Kanagal, based on three short stories; ''Hangu'' by Giraddi Govindaraj, ''Athithi'' by Veena and ''Munithaayi'' by Eshwara Chandra. The film stars Kalyan Kumar, Rajinikanth, B. Saroja Devi and Aarathi in the lead roles. The supporting cast includes Lokanath, Vamana Rao, Shivaramaiah and Master Umesh. Kalpana (18 July 1943 – 12 May 1979), born Sharat Lata, was an Indian actress who appeared in Kannada films. She was affectionately referred to as ''Minugu Taare'' ("A Shining Star") among the film fraternity. Ranganayaki ( kn, ರಂಗನಾಯಕಿ, ), is a 1981 Kannada film directed by Puttanna Kanagal starring Aarathi, Ambareesh, Ramakrishna, Ashok, Rajanand. The film is based on the novel ''Ranganayaki'' by Ashwattha. Plot Ranganayaki is a theater artiste who plays the lead female role in all the plays staged by the drama company owned by her foster-father. When a rich man, Nagaraja, falls in love with her, she marries him and draws the curtain on her career. The drama company falls on tough times after her departure. Parallel Cinema
Parallel cinema, or New Indian Cinema, is a film movement in Indian cinema that originated in the state of West Bengal in the 1950s as an alternative to the mainstream commercial Indian cinema.
