Galatasaray Wheelchair Basketball Team is the wheelchair basketball section of Galatasaray SK, a major sports club in Istanbul, Turkey. Galatasaray play matches in 2.200-seat arena, called the Ahmet Cömert Sport Hall. History Galatasaray Wheelchair Basketball Team hold the Turkish title and currently play in European Champions Cup organised by International Wheelchair Basketball Federation, IWBF Europe. Having only been founded in 2005, the basketball team has already won the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation, IWBF Champions League twice in a row, in years 2007-08 and 2008–09, making them one of the finest wheelchair teams in Europe. Galatasaray Wheelchair Basketball Team also won the Kitakyushu Champions Cup and became world champions in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2013. Ahmet Cömert Sport Hall ( tr, Ahmet Cömert Spor Salonu) is a multi-purpose indoor sport venue located in Ataköy, Bakırköy, Ataköy neighborhood of Bakırköy district in Istanbul, Turkey. The hall, with a capacity for 3,500 people, was built in 1998 within the Olympic complex. The venue has a parking lot capable of 150 cars. It is owned by the Youth and Sports Directorate of Istanbul Province (İstanbul GSM). Named in honor of the Turkish amateur boxer and sports official Ahmet Cömert (1926-1990), the sport hall hosts matches of the Turkish Basketball League and Turkish Wheelchair Basketball Super League. Since 2005, it is home to the Galatasaray Wheelchair Basketball Team. Other sports, which take place at Ahmet Cömert Sport Hall, include boxing, gymnastics, fencing, chess and as well as some individual sports. The Turkish Wheelchair Basketball Super League ( tr, Türkiye Tekerlekli Sandalye Basketbol Süper Ligi, TTSB Süper Ligi) is the top-flight professional league for wheelchair basketball teams in Turkey with men and women players. Established in 1997, it is governed by the Turkey Disabled Sports Federation ( tr, Türkiye Bedensel Engelliler Spor Federasyonu, TBESF). Ten teams compete annually in the league.
