Gail Amundrud
Gail Amundrud-Beattie (born April 6, 1957) is a former competition freestyle swimmer from Canada. Swimming career At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Amundrud won a bronze medal in the women's 4x100-metre freestyle relay, alongside her Canadian teammates Becky Smith, Barbara Clark and Anne Jardin. Individually, she also finished fifth in the final of the 200-metre freestyle, and advanced to the semifinal of the 100-metre freestyle. Despite being from Canada she won the 'British Open' 1974 ASA National Championship 100 metres freestyle title and the 200 metres freestyle. 1978 Commonwealth Games
The 1978 Commonwealth Games were held in Edmonton, Alberta from 3 to 12 August 1978, two years after the 1976 Summer Olympics were held in Montreal, Quebec. They were boycotted by Nigeria, in protest at New Zealand's sporting contacts with apartheid-era South Africa, as well as by Uganda, in protest at alleged Canadian hostility towards the government of Idi Amin. The Bid Election was held at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. This was the first Commonwealth Games where a computerised system was used to handle ticket sales. These were the first Commonwealth Games to be named ''Commonwealth Games'', having dropped ''British''. The Games were opened by Queen Elizabeth II for the first time since becoming Queen in 1952. Anne Jardin
Anne Elizabeth Jardin (born July 26, 1959), later known by her married name Anne Alexander, is a Canadian former competition swimmer who won two bronze medals at the 1976 Summer Olympics in her hometown of Montreal. She finished third in the women's 4x100-metre freestyle relay, alongside Becky Smith, Gail Amundrud and Barbara Clark, and also ended up in third place in the 4x100 medley relay, with Wendy Cook, Robin Corsiglia and Susan Sloan. She broke the world record in the 50-metre freestyle on August 19, 1978, in Etobicoke, Ontario. Jardin is currently a physical education teacher, as well as a Student Success teacher at Frank Ryan Senior Elementary School in Ottawa, Ontario. Her niece, Barbara Jardin, is a swimmer who competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Barbara Lynne Clark (born September 24, 1958), later known by her married name Barbara Parolin, is a former competitive swimmer from Canada, who competed primarily in international freestyle events. At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Clark won a bronze medal in the women's 4x100-metre freestyle relay, alongside Canadian teammates Becky Smith, Gail Amundrud and Anne Jardin. Becky Wiber
Rebecca Gwendolyn Smith (born June 3, 1959), professionally known as Becky Smith and later known by her married name Becky Wiber, is a Canadian former medley and butterfly swimmer who won the bronze medal in the women's 400-metre individual medley at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, finishing behind East German Ulrike Tauber (gold) and her Canadian teammate Cheryl Gibson (silver). At the same Olympic Games, she also finished third in the women's 4×100-metre freestyle relay, alongside Gail Amundrud, Barbara Clark and Anne Jardin. Her brothers Graham and George also competed in swimming. She was a grade school teacher at Westbrook School in Edmonton, Alberta for Grade 6. She retired in 2019.
