Gabyon Station
Gabyon Station, commonly referred to as Gabyon, is a pastoral lease that operates as a sheep station in Western Australia. It is situated about west of Yalgoo and east of Mullewa in the Murchison area of the Mid-West region. The station has as part of its southern border the Geraldton-Mount Magnet Road, and its south western border is close to Pindar. It lies in the south eastern catchment area of the Greenough River. The station to the west is Tallering, and to the north east of its borders are Jingemarra and Dalgaranga stations. It also has two public roads pass through the station – Gabyon Tardie Road and Yalgoo North Road. The current owners of the property are Michael Trant and Gemma Cripps, who have opened a farm stay business to supplement the station income following the collapse of the live sheep trade. A pastoral lease, sometimes called a pastoral run, is an arrangement used in both Australia and New Zealand where government-owned Crown land is leased out to graziers for the purpose of livestock grazing on rangelands. Australia Pastoral leases exist in both Australian commonwealth law and state jurisdictions. They do not give all the rights that attach to freehold land: there are usually conditions which include a time period and the type of activity permitted. Shearing Shed
Shearing sheds (or wool sheds) are large sheds located on sheep stations to accommodate large scale sheep shearing activities. In countries where large numbers of sheep are kept for wool, sometimes many thousands in a flock, shearing sheds are vital to house the necessary shearing equipment, and to ensure that the shearers and /or crutchers have a ready supply of dry, empty sheep. The shed also provides space where the wool is classed and pressed into approved wool packs and stored to await transport to market. Location of the shed is important as the site needs to be well drained and in an area reasonably close to most of the flock. Merino Sheep
The Merino is a breed or group of breeds of domestic sheep, characterised by very fine soft wool. It was established in Spain near the end of the Middle Ages, and was for several centuries kept as a strict Spanish monopoly; exports of the breed were not allowed, and those who tried risked the death penalty. Wool is the textile fibre obtained from sheep and other mammals, especially goats, rabbits, and camelids. Chirritta
Chirritta Station, most often referred to as Chirritta or Cherratta, is a pastoral lease operating as a sheep station in Western Australia. The property is situated approximately south of Roebourne and north east of Pannawonica in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. A portion of the Maitland River runs through the property. The property was established by Donald Norman McLeod in 1872. He returned to Victoria in 1882 and purchased Yannarie Estate near Portland, and later returned to Western Australia, acquiring Minilya Station. In 1884 Chirritta was reportedly sold for £18,000. By 1888 the property was put up for auction on behalf of D.N. McLeod and Company; the property was stocked with 17,000 sheep along with about 200 head of cattle.
