Gaasterlân-Sleat is a former municipality in the northern Netherlands. Its official name is in West Frisian, the Dutch name being Gaasterland-Sloten (). In 2014 it merged with the municipalities of Lemsterland and Skarsterlân to form the new municipality De Fryske Marren. De Fryske Marren
De Fryske Marren ( nl, De Friese Meren) is a municipality of Friesland in the northern Netherlands. It was established 1 January 2014 and consists of the former municipalities of Gaasterlân-Sleat, Lemsterland, Skarsterlân and parts of Boarnsterhim, all four of which were dissolved on the same day. The municipality is located in the province of Friesland, in the north of the Netherlands, and has a population of and a combined area of . Wijckel
Wijckel ( fry, Wikel) is a village in De Fryske Marren municipality in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 645 in 2017. History The village was first mentioned in the 13th century Wicle. The etymology is unclear. Wijckel is a spread out village along the roads. The Dutch Reformed Church has a 15th century tower which has been enlarged in 1821. In 1671, a new church has been adjacent to the tower. In 1840, Wijckel was home to 470 people. In 1975, the ''tjasker'' Zandpoel was built. Sondel
Sondel is a village in De Fryske Marren municipality in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 410 in 2017. History The village was first mentioned in 1422 Syndele. The etymologie is not clear. Sondel developed on a sandy ridge during the 12th or 13th century, and had both a water and road connection to the Zuiderzee (nowadays: IJsselmeer). The Dutch Reformed Church was built in 1870 as a replacement of a medieval church and has a 14th century bell. In 1840, Sondel was home to 239 people. In 1942, a radar installation was built near Sondel by the German occupiers, and consists of sixteen partially submerged barracks. Nowadays, it is in use as a recreational site. Sloten, Friesland
Sloten (; fry, Sleat) is a historical fortified city within the municipality of De Fryske Marren, in the Dutch province of Friesland. Sloten lies adjacent to the Slotermeer and is situated between the towns of Lemmer and Balk. Sloten is one of the eleven Frisian cities and was an independent municipality until 1984. Rijs
Rijs ( fry, Riis) is a village within the municipality of De Fryske Marren in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. Rijs is situated on the road between Oudemirdum and Hemelum. It has approximately 170 citizens (2017). Rijs is best known for its 300-year-old planted forest which known as ''Rijsterbos''. History The village was first mentioned in 1333 as Riis and means branches. It is related to a Monastic grange, grange of the Abbey of Staveren which was demolished in 1495 by Ygo Gales Galama, a Frisian warlord. Rijs was located on a sandy ridge. Huis Rijs was a ''stins'' (manor house) built in the 17th century. As part of the estate, a large forest was planted. The building was demolished in 1937, and replaced by a modern house. The forest is owned by and is publicly accessible. In 1840, Rijs was home to 95 people. In 1916, the former brickworks of Rijs was used as a refugee camp for several hundred Belgian refugees. Oudega, Gaasterlân-Sleat
Oudega ( fry, Aldegea) is a small village in De Fryske Marren municipality in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 265 in 2017. History It was first mentioned in 1412 as Oldegae, and means "old village". The Dutch Reformed Church dates from 1850, and has been built on a ''terp'' (artificial living mound). In 1840, Oudega was home to 366 people. Before 2014, Oudega was part of the Gaasterlân-Sleat municipality and before 1984 it belonged to Hemelumer Oldeferd which was named Hemelumer Oldephaert & Noordwolde (H.O.N.). before 1956. Skarsterlân
Skarsterlân (; nl, Scharsterland ) is a former municipality in the province of Friesland in the Netherlands. The municipality was created 1 January 1984 by merging the municipalities of Doniawerstal and Haskerland, the part of Utingeradeel consisting of the villages Akmarijp and Terkaple and the village Nieuwebrug that used to belong to Heerenveen. City hall was located in Joure. On 1 January 2014 it merged with the municipalities of Lemsterland and Gaasterlân-Sleat to form the new municipality De Fryske Marren. At first, the Dutch name Scharsterland was chosen, but as of 1 March 1985, the West Frisian name Skarsterlân was adopted and the Dutch name became obsolete. Elahuizen
Ealahuizen ( fry, Elahuzen) is a small village in De Fryske Marren municipality in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It is located on the banks of the and had a population of around 345 in 2017. History The village was first mentioned in 1412 as Elahuysen, and means "settlement of Ele (person)". The original settlement was flooded in the around 1700, and only a handful of farms and houses on the dike remained. The village was originally called ''Nijega''. To avoid confusion with to other villages of the same name, it took the name of "Nijega (H.O.N.)" and later Elahuizen. Ruigahuizen
Ruigahuizen ( fry, Rûgehuzen) is a small village in De Fryske Marren municipality in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands, south-west of Balk. It had a population of around 120 in 2017. One of Frieslands' wooden bell towers is at the cemetery. In a farmyard at the Rûchsterwei, there is an American wind engine. History The village was first mentioned between 1243 and 1254 as Rughahusem. It either means settlement near rough/wild land or settlement of Roege (person). A church was references as early as 1421, however it was demolished in the 18th century leaving only the bell tower. The tower was replaced in 1920. In 1840, Ruigahuizen was home to 32 people. Nijemirdum
Nijemirdum ( fry, Nijemardum) is a village in De Fryske Marren municipality in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands, with a population of around 555 as of 2004. There is a windmill in the village: 't Zwaantje, which is a monument. History The village was first mentioned in 1399 as Nuwe Merden. It uses Nije (new) to distinguish from Oudemirdum. Mirdum probably means settlement near a lake. The church dates from 1898, however there is a tower in the cemetery which dates from the 14th century. In 1516, the church which belonged to the tower was destroyed by the Burgundians. It was rebuilt, but became derelict in 1702 and was later demolished.In 1840, it was home to 131 people.
