GX-2
The GX-2 (Greyhound Experimental #2 – The Scenicruiser) was a prototype bus built for Greyhound that would eventually be developed into the Scenicruiser. After Greyhound's initial experiences with GX-1, the 50-seat double-decked bus, Greyhound President Orville Caesar decided that the next prototype would be a deck-and-a-half style. This decision resulted in the iconic silhouette of the Scenicruiser. It began in mid-1948 as a 35-foot design, but, in part, to accommodate more passengers, he directed his engineering department, which had obtained from GM a PD-3751, to add five feet in length to the upper deck. PD-4501 Scenicruiser
The GMC PD-4501 Scenicruiser, manufactured by General Motors (GM) for Greyhound Lines, Inc., was a three-axle monocoque two-level coach that Greyhound used from July 1954 into the mid-1970s. 1001 were made between 1954 and 1956. The Scenicruiser became an icon of the American way of life due to its presence throughout the United States in cities and along highways and popularity with the traveling public. The name was a portmanteau of the words "scenic" and "cruiser". The high-level design concept of Scenicruiser resembles some of the rolling stock of the passenger-carrying railroads of the United States and Canada, particularly their popular stainless steel dome cars. This type of two-level motorcoach body was common in the late 1940s in Western Europe, including Great Britain, where it was known as ''Observation coach''. GX-1 (Greyhound Experimental #1 – The Highway Traveler) was the first post-WWII concept bus from Greyhound that evolved into the Scenicruiser PD-4501. History Known as the “Greyhound Experimental #1” or GX-1, Orville Caesar’s postwar bus was designed by him and by Raymond Loewy, a multi-year activity beginning in the mid- to late-1930s. The “blue-sky sketches” of Loewy gave form and function to the many ideas seen in Caesar’s earlier patents that fit with his convictions of what the travelling public would want and what an intercity transportation company would need. A full-size mock-up with three levels was built in the early 1940s. Ralph Marterie (24 December 1914 – 10 October 1978) was an Italian big-band leader born in Acerra (near Naples), Italy. Life and career Marterie first played professionally at age 14 in Chicago. In the 1940s, he played trumpet for various bands. His first job as a bandleader was courtesy of the US Navy during World War II. He was then hired by the ABC Radio network, and the reputation built from these broadcasts led to a recording contract in 1949 with Mercury Records. His highest success in the U.S. charts was a cover of "Skokiaan" in 1954. In 1953 he recorded a version of Bill Haley's "Crazy, Man, Crazy", which is generally regarded as one of the first rock and roll songs. General Motors Diesel Division (GMDD) was a marketing and customer service unit of General Motors founded in 1938. It sought customers for GM's diesel engines, which had undergone major development during the 1930s. It was most active in association with GM's Detroit Diesel Engine Division, which produced lines of lightweight diesel engines that could be adapted to many uses including road vehicles, small boats, military equipment, construction and farm equipment, pumping, and auxiliary power generation. The Detroit Diesel Series 71 is a two-stroke diesel engine series, available in both inline and V configurations, manufactured by Detroit Diesel. The number 71 refers to the nominal displacement per cylinder in cubic inches, a rounding off of . Inline models included one, two, three, four and six cylinders, and the V-types six, eight, 12, 16 and 24 cylinders. The two largest V units used multiple cylinder heads per bank to keep the head size and weight to manageable proportions, the V-16 using four heads from the four-cylinder inline model and the V-24 using four heads from the inline six-cylinder model.
