{{No footnotes, date=November 2019 GTE Midwest, Inc. was a GTE operating company formed in 1993 upon the split off of some GTE local telephone operations from GTE North. GTE Midwest served Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota, and included the former operations of Contel in Iowa and Missouri. History In 1995, GTE Midwest's Minnesota operations were transferred to Contel of Minnesota, Inc. Contel of Minnesota had always been a separate company from GTE Midwest. In 2000, GTE completed the sale of some of its Missouri lines to Spectra Communications Group, which was an investment of CenturyTel. Also occurring that year Bell Atlantic acquired GTE, renaming the merged company Verizon. Upon the completion of the merger, Iowa operations of GTE Midwest were sold to Iowa Network Service, and Nebraska operations were sold to Citizens Utilities (Citizens Telecommunications Company of Nebraska). GTE North
Frontier North, Inc. is a local telephone operating company owned by Frontier Communications. History Frontier North was founded as Contel North, Inc., incorporated in Wisconsin in 1992. GTE acquisition of Contel Contel was acquired by GTE in 1993. Following its acquisition by GTE, Contel North was renamed GTE North, Inc.. In 1993, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, and Nebraska were split off from GTE North into a new company called GTE Midwest, Inc. Citizens Telecommunications Company of Nebraska provides local telephone service in Nebraska and some rural communities in northern Kansas. History Citizens Telecommunications Company of Nebraska was founded in 1999. It was created to take over former GTE Midwest operations that GTE sold off as part of a larger plan to sell telephone lines nationwide prior to its acquisition by Bell Atlantic Citizens Utilities, upon acquiring assets of the former Frontier Corporation, began doing business as Frontier Communications.
