GRiDPad
GRiDPad was a trademarked name for a series of pen computing tablets built by Grid Systems Corporation. The GRiDPad 1900, released in 1989, is regarded as the first commercially successful tablet computer. Jeff Hawkins went on to use the GRiDPad as a predecessor for his best known-invention, the Palm Pilot. Specifications The GRiDPad 1900 measured and weighed . Pen Computing
Pen computing refers to any computer user-interface using a pen or stylus and tablet, over input devices such as a keyboard or a mouse. Pen computing is also used to refer to the usage of mobile devices such as tablet computers, PDAs and GPS receivers. The term has been used to refer to the usage of any product allowing for mobile communication. An indication of such a device is a stylus or digital pen, generally used to press upon a graphics tablet or touchscreen, as opposed to using a more traditional interface such as a keyboard, keypad, mouse or touchpad. Jeffrey Hawkins is a co-founder of the companies Palm Computing, where he co-created the Palm (PDA), PalmPilot, and Handspring (company), Handspring, where he was one of the creators of the Palm Treo, Treo.Jeff Hawkins, ''On Intelligence'', p.28 He subsequently turned to work on neuroscience, founding the Redwood Neuroscience Institute, Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience in 2002. GridCase (stylized as GRiDCASE) is a line of rugged tablets and laptops by Grid Systems Corporation released as a successor of the GRiD Compass line. History The first model was released in 1985. The notable model - GRiDCASE 1535EXP - is a rugged laptop designed for NASA to be used in space, and becomes the first rugged portable PC to attain full TEMPEST accreditation from the NSA. Models Former line GRiDCASE 2 1985; low-contrast LCD screen with green background (instead of orange/yellow plasma screen with black background on a Compass laptops). This model was based on a MSDOS 2.11 and a bunch of apps burned on ROM that fit in the ROM tray in front. Touchscreens
A touchscreen or touch screen is the assembly of both an input ('touch panel') and output ('display') device. The touch panel is normally layered on the top of an electronic visual display of an information processing system. The display is often an LCD, AMOLED or OLED display while the system is usually used in a laptop, tablet, or smartphone.
