The Grading Of Recommendations Assessment, Development And Evaluation (GRADE) Approach
The GRADE approach (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) is a method of assessing the certainty in evidence (also known as quality of evidence or confidence in effect estimates) and the strength of recommendations in health care. It provides a structured and transparent evaluation of the importance of outcomes of alternative management strategies, acknowledgment of patients and the public values and preferences, and comprehensive criteria for downgrading and upgrading certainty in evidence. It has important implications for those summarizing evidence for systematic reviews, health technology assessments, and clinical practice guidelines as well as other decision makers. However, when used to summarize evidence from nutritional science, dietary, lifestyle and environmental exposure the use of the GRADE approach has been criticized. That is because the GRADE system only allows for randomized controlled trials (RCT) to be rated as high evidence and rates ...

Grade (education)
Grading in education is the process of applying standardized measurements for varying levels of achievements in a course. Grades can be assigned as letters (usually A through F), as a range (for example, 1 to 6), as a percentage, or as a number out of a possible total (often out of 100). In some countries, grades are averaged to create a grade point average (GPA). GPA is calculated by using the number of grade points a student earns in a given period of time. GPAs are often calculated for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, and can be used by potential employers or educational institutions to assess and compare applicants. A cumulative grade point average (CGPA), sometimes referred to as just GPA, is a measure of performance for all of a student's courses. History Yale University historian George Wilson Pierson writes: "According to tradition the first grades issued at Yale (and possibly the first in the country) were given out in the year 1785, when Presiden ...

Graded Vector Space
In mathematics, a graded vector space is a vector space that has the extra structure of a '' grading'' or a ''gradation'', which is a decomposition of the vector space into a direct sum of vector subspaces. Integer gradation Let \mathbb be the set of non-negative integers. An \mathbb-graded vector space, often called simply a graded vector space without the prefix \mathbb, is a vector space together with a decomposition into a direct sum of the form : V = \bigoplus_ V_n where each V_n is a vector space. For a given ''n'' the elements of V_n are then called homogeneous elements of degree ''n''. Graded vector spaces are common. For example the set of all polynomials in one or several variables forms a graded vector space, where the homogeneous elements of degree ''n'' are exactly the linear combinations of monomials of degree ''n''. General gradation The subspaces of a graded vector space need not be indexed by the set of natural numbers, and may be indexed by the elem ...

Lumber
Lumber is wood that has been processed into dimensional lumber, including beams and planks or boards, a stage in the process of wood production. Lumber is mainly used for construction framing, as well as finishing (floors, wall panels, window frames). Lumber has many uses beyond home building. Lumber is sometimes referred to as timber as an archaic term and still in England, while in most parts of the world (especially the United States and Canada) the term timber refers specifically to unprocessed wood fiber, such as cut logs or standing trees that have yet to be cut. Lumber may be supplied either rough- sawn, or surfaced on one or more of its faces. Beside pulpwood, ''rough lumber'' is the raw material for furniture-making, and manufacture of other items requiring cutting and shaping. It is available in many species, including hardwoods and softwoods, such as white pine and red pine, because of their low cost. ''Finished lumber'' is supplied in standard sizes, mostly ...

Grade (angle)
In trigonometry, the gradian, also known as the gon (from grc, γωνία, gōnía, angle), grad, or grade, is a unit of measurement of an angle, defined as one hundredth of the right angle; in other words, there are 100 gradians in 90 degrees.Harris, J. W. and Stocker, H. Handbook of Mathematics and Computational Science. New York: Springer-Verlag, p. 63, 1998. It is equivalent to of a turn, of a degree, or of a radian. Measuring angles in gradians is said to employ the ''centesimal'' system of angular measurement, initiated as part of metrication and decimalisation efforts. In continental Europe, the French word ''centigrade'', also known as ''centesimal minute of arc'', was in use for one hundredth of a grade; similarly, the ''centesimal second of arc'' was defined as one hundredth of a centesimal arc-minute, analogous to decimal time and the sexagesimal minutes and seconds of arc. The chance of confusion was one reason for the adoption of the term '' Celsius'' to repl ...

Graded (mathematics)
In mathematics, the term “graded” has a number of meanings, mostly related: In abstract algebra, it refers to a family of concepts: * An algebraic structure X is said to be I-graded for an index set I if it has a gradation or grading, i.e. a decomposition into a direct sum X = \bigoplus_ X_i of structures; the elements of X_i are said to be "homogeneous of degree ''i'' ". ** The index set I is most commonly \N or \Z, and may be required to have extra structure depending on the type of X. ** Grading by \Z_2 (i.e. \Z/2\Z) is also important; see e.g. signed set (the \Z_2-graded sets). ** The trivial (\Z- or \N-) gradation has X_0 = X, X_i = 0 for i \neq 0 and a suitable trivial structure 0. ** An algebraic structure is said to be doubly graded if the index set is a direct product of sets; the pairs may be called "bidegrees" (e.g. see Spectral sequence). * A I-graded vector space or graded linear space is thus a vector space with a decomposition into a direct sum V = \bi ...

Graded Poset
In mathematics, in the branch of combinatorics, a graded poset is a partially-ordered set (poset) ''P'' equipped with a rank function ''ρ'' from ''P'' to the set N of all natural numbers. ''ρ'' must satisfy the following two properties: * The rank function is compatible with the ordering, meaning that for all ''x'' and ''y'' in the order, if ''x'' < ''y'' then ''ρ''(''x'') < ''ρ''(''y''), and * The rank is consistent with the of the ordering, meaning that for all ''x'' and ''y'', if ''y'' covers ''x'' then ''ρ''(''y'') = ''ρ''(''x'') + 1. The value of the rank function for an element of the poset is called its rank. Sometimes a graded poset is called a ranked poset but that phrase has other meanings; see

Vowel Gradation
In linguistics, apophony (also known as ablaut, (vowel) gradation, (vowel) mutation, alternation, internal modification, stem modification, stem alternation, replacive morphology, stem mutation, internal inflection etc.) is any Alternation (linguistics), alternation within a word that indicates grammar, grammatical information (often inflectional). Description Apophony is exemplified in English language, English as the ''internal'' vowel alternations that produce such related words as * sng, sng, sng, sng * bnd, bnd * bld, bld * brd, brd * dm, dm * fd, fd * l, l * rse, rse, rsen * wve, wve * ft, ft * gse, gse * tth, tth The difference in these vowels marks variously a difference in Grammatical tense, tense or Grammatical aspect, aspect (e.g. ''sing/sang/sung''), Transitive verb, transitivity (''rise/raise''), part of speech (''sing/song''), or grammatical number (''goose/geese''). That these sound alternations function grammatically can be seen as they are often equivalent to ...

Graded Algebra
In mathematics, in particular abstract algebra, a graded ring is a ring such that the underlying additive group is a direct sum of abelian groups R_i such that R_i R_j \subseteq R_. The index set is usually the set of nonnegative integers or the set of integers, but can be any monoid. The direct sum decomposition is usually referred to as gradation or grading. A graded module is defined similarly (see below for the precise definition). It generalizes graded vector spaces. A graded module that is also a graded ring is called a graded algebra. A graded ring could also be viewed as a graded \Z-algebra. The associativity is not important (in fact not used at all) in the definition of a graded ring; hence, the notion applies to non-associative algebras as well; e.g., one can consider a graded Lie algebra. First properties Generally, the index set of a graded ring is assumed to be the set of nonnegative integers, unless otherwise explicitly specified. This is the case in this article ...

Grade Of Service
In telecommunication engineering, and in particular teletraffic engineering, the quality of voice service is specified by two measures: the grade of service (GoS) and the quality of service (QoS). Grade of service is the probability of a call in a circuit ''group'' being blocked or delayed for more than a specified interval, expressed as a vulgar fraction or decimal fraction. This is always with reference to the busy hour when the traffic intensity is the greatest. Grade of service may be viewed independently from the perspective of incoming versus outgoing calls, and is not necessarily equal in each direction or between different source-destination pairs. "Grade of Service" sometimes means a measure of inbound call center traffic to verify adherence to conditions to measure the success of customers served. On the other hand, the quality of service which a ''single'' circuit is designed or conditioned to provide, e.g. voice grade or program grade is called the quality of service. ...
