Günther Maul
Günther Edmund Maul (May 7, 1909 – September 28, 1997) was a German ichthyologist and taxidermist in Portugal. Maul came to Madeira in December 1930 to work as taxidermist at Museu Municipal do Funchal, which opened to the public in 1933. He was appointed director for the museum in 1940, a post that he held to his retirement in 1979. He, however, continued his research until shortly before his death. He started two journals (''Boletim do Museu Municipal do Funchal'' in 1945 and ''Bocagiana'' in 1959) and opened the museum's aquarium to the public in 1959. He also participated in several expeditions including with the French bathyscaphe ''Archimède'' in 1966 and organised the first multidisciplinary expedition to the Salvage Islands in 1963. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Madeira in 1995. Ichthyologist
Ichthyology is the branch of zoology devoted to the study of fish, including bony fish ( Osteichthyes), cartilaginous fish (Chondrichthyes), and jawless fish (Agnatha). According to FishBase, 33,400 species of fish had been described as of October 2016, with approximately 250 new species described each year. Etymology The word is derived from the Greek words ἰχθύς, ''ikhthus'', meaning "fish"; and λογία, ''logia'', meaning "to study". Otus Mauli
The Madeiran scops owl (''Otus mauli'') is a small extinct owl that once inhabited the island of Madeira in the Macaronesian archipelago off the north-west coast of Africa in the North Atlantic Ocean. History Fossil bones of the owl were found in Quaternary sites on Madeira. It is the first extinct owl species to be described from Macaronesia. The describers suggest that the most likely cause of extinction was human settlement in the early 15th century, with its associated habitat destruction and the introduction of alien species. Similar, though more fragmentary, remains were also found on the neighbouring island of Porto Santo, which may be of the same, or a closely related, species. Description The owl was similar in size to the Eurasian scops owl, though the leg bones were longer. Estimates of its body weight and wing loading suggest that it was largely ground-dwelling. ''Mauligobius'' is a genus of ray-finned fish from the family Gobiidae native to the eastern Atlantic Ocean. The name of this genus honours the ichthyologist and taxidermist Günther Edmund Maul (1909-1997) of the Museu Municipal do Funchal on Madeira for his assistance in making material and information available which the author, Peter Miller, used in his research on Macaronesian gobies. Max Poll
Max Fernand Leon Poll (21 July 1908 in Ruisbroek, Flemish Brabant, Ruisbroek – 13 March 1991 in Uccle) was a Belgians, Belgian ichthyologist who specialised in the Cichlidae. In the years 1946 and 1947 he organised an exploration, expedition to Lake Tanganyika. He has described several species of Pseudocrenilabrinae, such as ''Lamprologus signatus'', ''Steatocranus casuarius'', ''Neolamprologus brichardi'', and ''Neolamprologus pulcher''.
