Gülnaz Karataş
Gülnaz Karataş (1971–25 October 1992), nom de guerre, Berîtan, was a female fighter of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). She became a Kurdish cultural figure after dying, and a symbol of women within the guerrilla movement. Early life and education Gülnaz Karataş was born in 1971 in Solhan, Bingöl, Turkey. Her family was Alevi Kurdish from Dersim. She attended primary and secondary school in Elazığ. In 1989, she began to study at the Department of Economics at the Istanbul University. It is reported that until 1990 she was unaware of her Kurdish heritage. Adult life In 1990 she got to know networks of the PKK and was arrested, but released shortly after in 1991. On the 9 May 1991 she entered the PKK in the Cudi Mountains, Şırnak. In 1992, she was sent as a leader of a small group to Şemdinli. Iraqi Kurdistan
Iraqi Kurdistan or Southern Kurdistan ( ku, باشووری کوردستان, Başûrê Kurdistanê) refers to the Kurdish-populated part of northern Iraq. It is considered one of the four parts of "Kurdistan" in Western Asia, which also includes parts of southeastern Turkey (Northern Kurdistan), northern Syria (Western Kurdistan), and northwestern Iran (Eastern Kurdistan). Much of the geographical and cultural region of Iraqi Kurdistan is part of the Kurdistan Region (KRI), an autonomous region recognized by the Constitution of Iraq. Zeynep Kınacı
Zeynep Kınacı (1972–1996) was a member of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) known for having committed its first suicide attack. The way she carried it out has influenced women's role within the PKK. Biography Kinaci was born in a village in Malatya province in 1972 to a family of the Mamureki tribe. She studied social sciences at the Inönü University in Malatya and worked at the state hospital as a X-ray technician. In 1995 she joined the PKK. The suicide attack On the 30 June 1996, Kınacı triggered the explosives near Turkish soldiers in Tunceli who were singing the İstiklal Marşı, killing around ten soldiers while wounding over thirty. Before the attack, she wrote three letters in which she explained her reasons for the suicide attack, one directed to the leadership of the PKK, one to the Women Freedom Fighters and another one to the revolutionary people of Kurdistan.
