Göschenen Railway Station
Göschenen railway station is a railway station in the Swiss canton of Uri and municipality of Göschenen. Situated on the original line of the Gotthard railway, at the northern mouth of the Gotthard Tunnel, the station is also the junction point with the Schöllenenbahn. Most trains on the Gotthard route now use the Gotthard Base Tunnel and do not pass through Göschenen station. The Gotthard railway connects Göschenen via Immensee with Zürich in the north, and via the Gotthard Rail Tunnel and Chiasso with Milan in the south. The importance of the line decreased in the 2010s with the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel (2016) and Ceneri Base Tunnel (2020), creating a new fast route between Central Switzerland and Ticino. Südostbahn now runs hourly panoramic service over the route. The Schöllenenbahn, a very short metre gauge branch line, operates between Göschenen and Andermatt, just to the south. Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn
The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn is a narrow gauge railway line and a railway company (Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn AG, MGB) in Switzerland. The track width is . It was created in 2003 through an amalgamation of Furka Oberalp Bahn (FO) and BVZ Zermatt-Bahn (BVZ). The name comes from the Matterhorn and St. Gotthard Pass. Its network is long and stretches from Disentis in the canton of Graubünden to Zermatt in the canton of Wallis, by way of the Oberalp Pass and Andermatt in the canton of Uri, the Furka Base Tunnel, Brig, and Visp. From Andermatt, a branch line (the formerly independent Schöllenenbahn) extends to Göschenen, at the northern end of the Gotthard Rail Tunnel. The network is an adhesion railway but using Abt rack assistance on the steeper inclines. Gotthard Panorama Express
The Gotthard Panorama Express is a tourist oriented boat and panoramic train line which connects Lucerne to Lugano, crossing the Swiss Alps from North to South through the Gotthard crest tunnel. Until 2017, the train was known as the William Tell Express (german: Wilhelm Tell Express). It is jointly operated by the Swiss Federal Railways, who operate the train, and the Lake Lucerne Navigation Company (german: Schifffahrtsgesellschaft des Vierwaldstättersees; SGV), who operate the boat. Previous iterations of the train ran to a southern terminus at Locarno rather than the current terminus at Lugano. Regional rail, also known as local trains and stopping trains, are passenger rail services that operate between towns and cities. These trains operate with more stops over shorter distances than inter-city rail, but fewer stops and faster service than commuter rail. Metre-gauge railways are narrow-gauge railways with track gauge of or 1 metre. The metre gauge is used in around of tracks around the world. It was used by European colonial powers, such as the French, British and German Empires. In Europe, large metre-gauge networks remain in use in Switzerland, Spain and many European towns with urban trams, but most metre-gauge local railways in France, Germany and Belgium closed down in the mid-20th century, although many still remain. Ceneri Base Tunnel
The Ceneri Base Tunnel (CBT, it, Galleria di base del Monte Ceneri) is a Swiss railway base tunnel in the canton of Ticino. It passes under Monte Ceneri between Camorino in the Magadino Flat and Vezia near Lugano; it bypasses the former high-altitude rail route through the Monte Ceneri Tunnel. It is composed of two single-track tunnels, each long. It is part of the New Railway Link through the Alps (NRLA) project for faster north-south rail links across the Swiss Alps. An exploration tunnel near Sigirino was excavated between 1999 and 2003 to gain geological data on the rock formations at the Ceneri Base Tunnel's level.
