Ephydridae
Ephydridae (shore fly, sometimes brine fly) is a family of insects in the order Diptera. Shore flies are tiny flies that can be found near seashores or at smaller inland waters, such as ponds. About 2,000 species have been described worldwide, including Ochthera. The petroleum fly, ''Helaeomyia petrolei'', is the only known insect whose larvae live in naturally occurring crude petroleum. Another notable species is '' Ephydra hians'' which lives in vast number at Mono Lake. Description For terms, see Morphology of Diptera. The flies are minute to small (0.9 to 7.0 mm), with black or gray colorations. Wings are sometimes patterned. Costa with two interruptions are present in first section, near the humeral cross-vein and again near the end of vein 1. The second basal cell is not separated from the discal cell. Arista are bare or with hairs on the upper side (plumose on the upper side). The mouth opening is very large in some species. The ratio of vertical diameter of eye ... Kálmán Kertész
Kálmán Kertész (2 January 1867 Prešov, Sáros County – 28 December 1922 Budapest) was a Hungarian entomologist mainly interested in Diptera. He was the director of the Zoological Department of the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest. Kertész world catalogues of the Diptera families Tabanidae and Pipunculidae were published in journals in 1900 and 1901, then between 1903 and 1907 he edited the whole Diptera catalogue of the Palaearctic Region and issued it in Budapest. This catalogue was together with Mario Bezzi, Paul Stein (1852–1921) and Theodor Becker as his co-authors. He worked on the world catalogue of Diptera which he planned to be 10 volumes and wrote alone. The first two volumes were issued in 1902 with the support of the Hungarian National Museum. The following 5 volumes were printed at his own cost in Szeged. Works *''Catalogus Tabanidarum orbis terrarum universi.'' Hermann Loew
Friedrich Hermann Loew (19 July 1807 – 21 April 1879) was a German entomologist who specialised in the study of Diptera, an order of insects including flies, mosquitoes, gnats and midges. He described many world species and was the first specialist to work on the Diptera of the United States. Biography Early years Hermann Loew was born in Weissenfels, Saxony a short distance south of Halle (Germany). The Loew family, though not wealthy, was well-placed. Loew's father was a functionary for the Department of Justice of the Duchy of Saxony who later became a ''Geheimer Regierungsrath'' of Prussia. Between 1817 and 1829 Loew attended first the Convent school of Rossleben, then the University of Halle-Wittenberg, graduating in mathematics, philology and natural history. Teacher, tutor and husband Recognizing his abilities as a mathematician, the university, on his graduation, appointed him as a lecturer in the same subjects. In 1830 he went to Berlin and gave lessons in differen ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
